The Forward is seeking one or more beginning journalists passionate about digital and audience — and the Jewish world — for paid internships reporting and writing news items. Supported by the Sy Syms Endowment for Journalistic Excellence. Interns work up to 29 hours/week for $17/hour. Initial term is 10 weeks; may be extended up to a year. Rolling applications accepted. This is a fast-paced, reader-facing job reporting, writing and publishing frequently across a broad range of subjects. Candidates should have experience at campus or other publications; strong internet/social media skills; great story instincts and editorial judgment; quick, clear writing with solid style/grammar; ability to juggle projects and work well in groups. Responsibilities include: reporting and writing across sections (including breaking news); scouring the Jewish internet; supporting colleagues; quickly sourcing photos/art; using social and other platforms to build readership; using audience tools and traffic analysis to optimize story selection and framing. Ideal candidates are interested in news from Israel and Hollywood, politics and antisemitism; have a keen eye for what resonates for Jewish readers; can apply a sophisticated or sassy Jewish lens; sufficient Jewish background helpful, with curiosity and commitment to fill gaps; work well under pressure and collaboratively; eager to grow and take feedback. Goals: consistently clean copy; creativity and flexibility in format/medium; channel the Forward’s brand while developing voice; use SEO and audience tools to maximize impact. Successful interns often advance to fellowships and staff roles. To apply, send a resume, five clips, a one-pager about why you want the gig, and contact info for at least two references to jobs@forward.com. Subject: Digital reporting and writing internship.
