Originally published in Yiddish, today we are a digital media publication reaching millions through thought-provoking reporting, commentary and storytelling that reflects the full spectrum of Jewish life. Our journalism wins awards and is cited in outlets such as The New York Times, Politico, and The New Yorker. While headquartered in New York City, we also have staff and reporters in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, West Virginia and elsewhere.About the role: We are seeking a visionary, creative, and mission-driven Editor-in-Chief to lead the Forward into its next chapter, building on momentum and ever-wider readership. The EIC will oversee all editorial operations, guide and mentor a talented team, and champion innovation in content and audience strategy to engage younger, more diverse audiences.What you’ll be doing:- Develop and execute an editorial vision reflecting the American Jewish landscape, honoring the Forward’s legacy while engaging younger audiences.- Lead across news, opinion, culture, and Jewish life on web, mobile, newsletter, social, video, audio.- Commission and shape coverage reflecting the diversity of Jewish experiences and perspectives.- Experiment with new formats and channels to reach Gen Z and millennial audiences.- Partner across the organization to drive engagement, grow readership, members, and supporters.- Foster a newsroom culture of excellence, collaboration, innovation, inclusion, and growth.- Represent the Forward publicly, in media, and with partners and stakeholders.- Serve on the executive team, interface with the Board, and join the CEO in meeting key supporters.We’d like your experience to include:- 10+ years in journalism, with at least 5 in editorial leadership roles.- Proven success growing digital audiences and building products that resonate with younger people.- Strong understanding of Jewish life with a commitment to breadth and nuance.- Editorial judgment, creativity, and cross-platform fluency.- Experience leading and managing with clarity, empathy, and accountability.- Familiarity with analytics, SEO, social trends, and digital publishing tools.Preferred:- Experience in nonprofit or mission-driven media.- Background in audience development, newsletters, social, video, and/or podcasts.- Knowledge of Yiddish and/or Hebrew.What we offer:- Hybrid work: onsite 2–3 days/week in NYC.- Robust benefits: health, life, 401k with match after first year, STD/LTD, FSA, transit, generous vacation including Jewish holidays.- Opportunity to impact independent Jewish journalism.- Salary range: $200,000–$250,000, commensurate with experience.To apply: Submit a cover letter, resume, and three work samples (articles, editorial projects, or digital initiatives) to jobs-EIC@forward.com.
