Are you ready for a leadership role in Group Fitness? At JCC Greater Boston, we are seeking a Group Fitness Manager who will elevate our group classes, coach a team of talented instructors and ensure every class is impactful, inclusive, and unforgettable. Under the Direction of the Health & Wellness Operations and Program Manager, the Group Fitness Manager oversees all Group Fitness and Premium Fitness programs including ideation, implementation, and ongoing assessment, delivering the highest quality of programs and services to all participants. This includes managing a team of fitness instructors to ensure a consistent and comprehensive Group Fitness schedule, and a safe, welcoming environment for all community members. The Group Fitness Manager collaborates with other JCC departments and form key strategic partnerships to develop and execute innovative fitness initiatives that foster community engagement, health & wellbeing, and align with the mission and values of the organization. The Group Fitness Manager works with the Health & Wellness Operations Manager to manage the Group Fitness budget, monitor Group Fitness class participation and track/report key program metrics to leadership.

Interacting with all levels of employees and management, and building strong relationships with all stakeholders, the HR Coordinator ensures that employees and managers receive accurate and clear information, and experience coordinated HR services aligned with established best practices and policies. Deploying a balance of flexibility, graciousness, results orientation, drive and discipline the HR Coordinator primarily ensures transactions occur timely and effectively, and participates and assists in the administration and organization of various HR services, procedures, and special projects as assigned.

Primary responsibilities include, and are not limited to:

Manage and oversee the all day-to-day program operations and activity and ensure JCC offers a Develop, implement and manage a comprehensive schedule of group fitness classes to meet the needs and interests of members:.

  • Develop, implement and manage all group fitness classes and events to meet participant needs and interested and aligned with JCC goals and objectives
  • Ensure all fitness classes are conducted in a safe and effective manner.
  • Engage with program participants and elicit feedback, identify opportunities for improvement, program interests and make necessary adjustments to class schedules and offerings.
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of group fitness rooms, equipment and facilities.
  • Collaborate with other departments to promote and market group fitness programs to the community, including Membership and Member Experience
  • Collaborate with the Health & Wellness Operations Manager on the Group Fitness budget, including tracking expenses and revenue, and making recommendations for program improvements.
  • Stay current with industry best practices and explore/implement new strategies to meet the needs of current and prospective members while increasing revenue for the organization.
  • Oversee all Group Fitness class scheduling, instructor substitutions and cancellations via the class reservation system and JCCGB+ online site.
  • Work with Group Fitness Instructors and Facilities staff to ensure studio cleanliness, safety and a positive space for movement and exercise to maximize member experience.
  • Learn and apply JCC Greater Boston emergency protocols and respond accordingly during urgent and emergency situations.
  • Serve as On Duty Operation Manager by being available by radio to assist with member needs.
  • Provide regular reports to leadership on program metrics and key performance indicators.

Build meaningful relationships, lead participant engagement, and collaborate with JCC colleagues to ensure a vibrant thriving program

  • Engage with program participants and elicit feedback, identify opportunities for improvement, program interests and make necessary adjustments to class schedules and offerings.
  • Collaborate with other departments to promote and market group fitness programs to the community, including Membership and Member Experience
  • Maximize Group Fitness class participation and enhance Group Fitness offerings via special “pop-up” and demo classes, fitness challenges, and special events.
  • Work in partnership with the Marketing Department and other key staff on program material to promote JCC’s Group Fitness Programs, maximizing participation, engagement, and revenue. (Promotional vehicles include the Group Fitness Schedule, Program Guide, quarterly Program Submission for website entry and communication strategy, flyers and other materials.)

Standard Staff Expectations:

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervisory responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Manage the recruitment, hiring, training, and scheduling of fitness instructors.
  • Supervise all Group Fitness Instructors including Group Fitness, Zumba, Yoga, Cycle and other certified instructors.
  • Train Group Fitness Instructors on all necessary technology and troubleshooting methods, as well as clarify resources available to assist instructors with emergent issues (e.g. technology issues, maintenance needs, etc.).
  • Communicate necessary organizational updates, policy and procedural changes with Group Fitness Instructors.
  • Perform supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and onboarding employees; payroll; class scheduling; performance management; sharing member feedback; problem resolution; and disciplinary action in collaboration with the Human Resources Department.
  • Uphold the policies of the organization and align work with the overall mission, vision, and strategic objectives of the JCC; report to the Senior Director of Fitness & Wellness Programs any related issues.
  • Create/facilitate an environment where employees can achieve individual goals.
  • Conduct supervisory meetings to provide on-going guidance, direction and supervision. Foster effective relationships with Group Fitness Instructors while providing on-going guidance, engagement, and supervision via regular staff communication and one on one meetings as needed.

This is a regular, 25 hour per week, salaried position with a supportive in-person work environment (occasional opportunity to work remotely as needed), and a competitive starting salary range of (of $35,165-38,750) annually.

The salary offered will ultimately be determined by relevant qualifications, experience, and JCC's internal equity.

Education and Experience: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Fitness or related field, and 2 years’ experience in group fitness and exercise. CPR certification required, or willing to become certified upon hire and within their initial period of employment.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meet minimum criteria.

Physical Requirements: This position is primarily in-person and on-site with occasional opportunities to work remote occasionally and as needed to accomplish administrative duties. While working in person, must be able to work well in in a busy, dynamic and sometimes noisy environment involving multiple tasks and priorities. When working remote, must have a laptop or desktop, phone, reliable internet connection and software needed to perform your job. This position requires flexibility in schedule and being available to respond and engage with direct reports via email or phone as needed, including weekends. Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds (boxes of supplies, fitness equipment, etc.). Availability to manage events during weekend and evening hours is also required.
