Events and Office Assistant

Congregation Shaarei Shamayim, a progressive Jewish synagogue in Madison, Wisconsin, seeks an Events and Office Assistant to join our growing congregation. The position is 8-10 hours per week.

We are seeking a highly organized, friendly individual to work with our Rabbi, staff, and volunteers to staff events (holiday celebrations, bnei mitzvah, and Shabbat potlucks) and provide basic office support. Most events are held on evenings and weekends; there are usually one or two a month, though at peak times there will be more. Applicants need not be Jewish, but some knowledge of and experience with the Jewish community is important.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set up and clean up events, including laundering tablecloths
  • Oversee greeters and volunteers and help with other tasks as needed during events
  • Handle all aspects of basic audio visual needs for events
  • Ensure we have supplies for events
  • Run errands as needed to support event and office functions
  • Provide office support to Rabbi and staff

AN IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • High school diploma
  • Demonstrable experience with audio visual media and Zoom and be able to learn new technologies quickly as needed
  • The ability to troubleshoot audio visual challenges in real time and address them
  • Experience providing support, direction, and appreciation for volunteers
  • Ability and willingness to work nights and weekends as well as some day time hours
  • Willingness to work on Jewish holidays, including Shabbat
  • Understand the importance of handling confidential information appropriately
  • Time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with deadlines and while managing multiple tasks
  • Driver’s License and reliable transportation
  • Experience with or interest in learning about Jewish customs, culture, and practices
  • Experience working effectively with people of diverse races and ethnicities, age, socio-economic backgrounds, abilities/disabilities and chronic illness, and gender and sexual identity
  • Live in the Madison area with the ability to easily commute to the office as this is an onsite position

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This position reports to the Rabbi and works closely with other staff. This is an onsite position. Applicants need not be Jewish.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$18-20 per hour
