Congregation Shaarei Shamayim, a progressive Jewish community in Madison, Wisconsin, seeks a Director of Engagement and Operations to be responsible for key areas of our congregation: operations, member engagement, communications, and development.
We seek an individual with strong writing skills, exceptional interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage committees, volunteers, and events. We wish to hire someone who is warm,outgoing and well organized.
In this role, you would meet regularly with members, organize and staff events, work with committees, and supervise our office operations. You would be comfortable balancing a range of roles and able to learn new technologies. You would be eager to grow with our growing congregation.
Our rabbi supervises this position. Applicants need not be Jewish.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
**Operations:**
- Supervise office staff (currently an office manager, and third-party bookkeeper) to ensure that office and administrative functions are running smoothly;
- Work with building facility partners as needed;
- Maintain awareness of the congregation’s finances, and support the office manager and treasurer as needed (e.g., participate in annual budgeting process).
**Member Engagement:**
- Meet with new and prospective members and help them get involved in the congregation;
- Provide organizational support to volunteer-led committees including membership, finance, fundraising, and social action;
- Work with congregants to plan and implement events and programs;
- Attend small group gatherings, holiday celebrations, and other events in order to meet and talk to members;
- Evaluate member experience to assure member satisfaction and retention.
**Communications:**
- Coordinate the congregation’s marketing and communications, including email, social media, and printed materials;
- Work in coordination with the rabbi and volunteer leadership to write community announcements, program and event marketing, and other synagogue communications.
**Development**:
- Support the fundraising committee in launching its new campaign;
- Develop fundraising materials in conjunction with the fundraising committee;
- Work with volunteers to organize fundraising events.
**PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND QUALITIES**
- Bachelor’s degree preferred;
- Minimum three years of management experience in a comparable environment;
- Proficient with computers, including word processing, spreadsheets, virtual meeting software, and email;
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters with maturity, discretion, and professionalism;
- Experience with or interest in learning about Jewish customs, culture, and practices;
- Ability to work some nights, weekends, and on Jewish holidays.
**COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS**
- $65,000 - $70,000/year depending on experience
