The Brotherhood Synagogue, located on Gramercy Park, is the largest Jewish congregation in downtown New York City with 800 member units. It is an independent, progressive community following the Conservative tradition. This combination allows the Synagogue to honor the spiritual and ethical heritage of the Jewish faith and celebrate the deep commitment and wide diversity of their membership. The Brotherhood Synagogue Nursery School is a Reggio Emilia-inspired educational environment located within the synagogue. We are committed to fostering a nurturing, creative, and inquiry-driven atmosphere where children’s curiosity and developmental needs are met with respect and care. Our Jewish values guide our daily interactions and provide a foundation for building meaningful community relationships. We are looking for a passionate, experienced, and dedicated Full-Time Head Teacher to lead our 4’s classroom.
Position Overview:
As the Head Teacher in our 4’s classroom, you will be responsible for creating a dynamic, child-centered learning environment that encourages exploration, creativity, and independence. You will work closely with a team of educators to implement the Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum and integrate Jewish traditions and values in ways that resonate with young children. The Head Teacher will also play a vital role in fostering strong partnerships with families, guiding their children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum that is responsive to the interests and needs of the children.
- Lead a team of assistant teachers and collaborate to create a warm, supportive, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment.
- A deep knowledge of child development and Kindergarten
- Observe and document children’s progress, interests, and learning, ensuring ongoing reflection and assessment.
- Build strong, trusting relationships with children, their families, and the wider school
- Integrate Jewish values, traditions, and customs in daily activities, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.
- Provide individualized support to children as they develop foundational social, emotional, and cognitive skills.
- Foster an environment of open-ended exploration, inquiry, and creative
- Maintain effective communication with parents through regular updates, conferences, and events.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all children in the
- Take an active role in maintaining the classroom environment, including organizing materials, setting up activities, and maintaining safety standards.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related
- A minimum of 3+ years of experience teaching in an early childhood or nursery school setting, preferably with 4-year-olds.
- Knowledge of the Reggio Emilia approach and a strong interest in implementing its
- Passion for early childhood education, with a deep understanding of child development and a commitment to fostering a nurturing, play-based environment.
- Experience incorporating Jewish traditions and values into educational settings is preferred but not required.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational
- Ability to collaborate effectively with team members, families, and the wider school
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Must be reliable, responsible, and able to take initiative in a dynamic classroom
Hours:
- Monday to Friday, 8:20-3:00 pm
Compensation:
- Salary range $65,000-$70,000, commensurate with
- Employees may elect to participate in health benefits (medical and dental), commuter benefits, and the 401(k) plan.
