The Role:
The Director of Operations brings entrepreneurial energy to not only manage the smooth daily operational and administrative rhythms of Young Israel, but also to help us continue to build and grow a warm, vibrant, and exciting community. The Director of Operations reports to the rabbi, and partners with the board of directors to manage the synagogue business and operations as well as to execute on programs and events. With an actively growing synagogue community including a membership that has more than doubled in the last 10 years, this position presents an exciting opportunity to help guide our synagogue into its next chapter.
Key Responsibilities:
Community Engagement & Communications
● Manage communications to the community membership.
● Oversee website updates, create Facebook events and post on community and Federation
calendars.
Program Logistics & Event Coordination
● Proactively plan, schedule, and execute membership and youth events throughout the year in collaboration with the rabbi, board of directors, and committees.
● Manage logistics for Kiddish, seudah shlishit, life cycle events, and other events. Oversee the volunteers who facilitate food preparation and serving.
Facility Operations
● Manage building readiness and prepare spaces for Shabbat, holidays, rituals and life-cycle
events.
● Schedule and supervise repairs, deliveries, maintenance, and project work.
● Track inventory and acquire (shop/order) supplies weekly.
● Oversee custodial staff, maintain supplies inventory, and organize and maintain spaces
throughout the building.
Office Management
● Manage synagogue mail and email.
● Maintain digital records and files, including membership database and directory.
● Schedule meetings, and maintain the global synagogue calendar across platforms.
Financial Support
● Manage donor checks and acknowledgements, and coordinate sponsorship billing and
recognition.
● Liaise with the synagogue bookkeeper and Treasurer for invoice tracking, budgetary updates and reporting.
Rabbi and Board Coordination
● Support long-term planning and systems development with Rabbi, board and other
professional staff.
● Attend and report at board of director meetings when requested.
Required Qualifications
● 1–3 years’ experience in synagogue, nonprofit, or event operations.
● Energetic self-starter able to work independently and in coordination with synagogue
leadership to achieve synagogue’s short- and long-term goals.
● Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.
● Proficiency in Google Suite (Forms, Drive, Sheets, etc).
● Familiarity with Canva, ShulCloud, and basic website and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).
● Proficiency in Judaism, Jewish communal life and Shabbat/holiday structure preferred.
● Availability to work flexible hours and staff events outside standard business hours.
Compensation & Benefits
● Salary range is $65,000 - $85,000 and is commensurate with experience.
