About Us

One of America’s most highly respected congregations, Wilshire Boulevard Temple has been serving the Los Angeles Jewish community since its founding in 1862 as Congregation B’nai B'rith, the city’s first synagogue. Today, Wilshire Boulevard Temple carries out the mission through a variety of ways, as a center for Jewish spirituality and celebration, a place for lifelong learning and friendship and home to an engaged congregation where every person can make a difference.

We have three locations to serve our communities: the historic Erika J Glazer Family Campus in Wilshire Center/Koreatown, our modern Audrey and Sydney Irmas Campus in West Los Angeles, and our inviting Resnick Family Campus in Brentwood. All campuses offer services and worship, adult programs, life cycle events, volunteer and social action opportunities, as well as cultural and educational events. Many of our cultural activities are open to the wider public.

The Position:

We are seeking an efficient, nurturing, organized Tutor with excellent communication skills and follow through to develop our students’ skills and confidence while preparing them for their Bar, Bat, or B’nei Mitzvah service. The successful applicant will be a part of our dynamic tutoring team and will aid in instilling all Wilshire Boulevard Temple children with the wisdom and values of Judaism, as we help prepare them for their special day.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions

Under the supervision of our Cantors, the Bar, Bat, B’nei Mitzvah Tutor will provide one-on-one instruction such that their students are able to independently chant assigned blessings, prayers, Torah and haftarah portions on the day of their B’nei Mitzvah. Materials, such as voice recordings and PDFs of the prayers, blessings, and portions are created by our team and provided to the tutor. We are currently looking for a Tutor who is able to meet both in person, especially on and near to our Glazer (east side) campus and via Zoom.

The Bar, Bat, B’nei Mitzvah Tutor is expected to keep a weekly record of student attendance and progress via Mitzvah Tools (our software tool). Consequently, comfort using tech skills is essential. Mitzvah Tools experience is a plus, but not required. In addition to keeping a weekly progress report, the Tutor will communicate with the Cantors’ office and the parents of the student regularly. The Bar, Bat, B’nei Mitzvah Tutor will be thoroughly prepared for each session, serve as a role model to their students, and will maintain regular and consistent attendance.

Qualifications:

• Fully fluent in the prayers and blessings recited during a Saturday Shabbat service
• Able to read Torah and haftarah and chant trope
• Responsible, organized, and a great communicator
• Works well as part of a team
• Previous Bar, Bat, B’nei Mitzvah Tutoring preferred

Work Schedule:

• This is an non-exempt, part-time position;
• It is estimated that this position would work 7-10 hours per week in the afternoons and early evenings;
• Actual tutoring hours are scheduled based on Tutor’s and students’ mutual availability.

Salary:

• $80 per hour for Zoom tutoring
• $90 per hour for in-person, on-campus tutoring
• $105 per hour for at-home tutoring
• $30 per hour for administrative time
