Overview:
Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS), a nonprofit founded in 1943, has grown to be the largest provider of licensed outpatient community mental health services and one of the largest human service agencies in Westchester County. We provide state-of-the-art programs and services and compassionate care to more than 20,000 people of all ages and backgrounds each year.
The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the upkeep, repair, and overall maintenance of community residences in compliance with Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) regulations. This role helps ensure that residences remain safe, functional, and well-maintained.
The salary range for this full-time (40 hours per week) position is $56,160 ($27/hour).
Responsibilities:
As a valued member of our team, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs in accordance with regulatory requirements and agency standards
- Identify maintenance issues, troubleshoot problems, and determine appropriate repair solutions
- Complete required maintenance documentation and compliance-related paperwork
- Inspect buildings, equipment, and appliances to ensure safe and proper operation
- Diagnose appliance and equipment issues and coordinate or complete repairs promptly
- Report unusual or urgent maintenance concerns to leadership
- Adhere to OSHA standards and all agency safety policies and procedures
- Assist with monthly residence inspections and support audits conducted by Fire Marshals and OPWDD surveyors
- Perform basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, masonry, and electrical repairs
- Ensure the safe and proper use of hand tools, power tools, equipment, and materials
- Repair and maintain structures and fixtures including sinks, showers, cabinets, doors, walls, and building exteriors
- Recognize major repair needs and communicate them to the Maintenance Supervisor and Senior Director of Facilities
- Purchase approved supplies and equipment as needed
- Drive agency vehicles as required
- Maintain clean, safe work areas and remove debris upon completion of projects
- Assist with snow removal and salting of walkways during inclement weather
- Maintain the cleanliness, inspection, and registration requirements of maintenance vehicles
- Safeguard agency tools, equipment, and supplies
- Assist with furniture replacement, removal, and donation coordination
Requirements:
We are seeking candidates who possess the following qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Valid driver’s license for a minimum of two years with an acceptable driving record
- Experience with basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, painting, and general home repairs
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of proper use of maintenance materials, hand tools, and power tools
- Ability to safely operate maintenance equipment and agency vehicles, including passenger vans
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Professional, reliable, and dependable work ethic
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, in English
- Ability to exercise patience, flexibility, and sound judgment
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks including kneeling, bending, climbing, and prolonged standing or sitting
- Mechanical aptitude and commitment to workplace safety practices
