About the Opportunity

UJA Federation of Greater Toronto is seeking a Senior Director, Editorial and Strategic Communications to provide senior editorial leadership across UJA’s communications and content function.

Reporting to the Vice President, Content and Communications Strategy, this role will help translate organizational priorities, community issues, leadership messages, and major initiatives into strong communications across a range of formats and audiences.

The Senior Director will serve as lead writer and senior editor for UJA’s priority communications, including leadership messages, speeches, remarks, newsletters, op-eds, campaign materials, video scripts, impact storytelling, social-first content, and other high-profile content

This is a senior, hands-on editorial role. It requires excellent writing, sound judgment, audience awareness, comfort working under deadline, and the ability to bring structure and clarity to complex information.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Serve as lead writer and senior editor for UJA’s priority communications, including leadership messages, speeches, remarks, newsletters, op-eds, campaign materials, video scripts, impact storytelling, social-first content, and other high-profile content.
    • Ensure major communications are clear,accurate, well structured, audience-focused, and aligned with UJA’s voice and priorities.
    • Provide senior editorial leadership across recurring communications, major content products, and high-profile editorial materials.
    • Translate UJA’s priorities, programs, and community issues into clear, accessible communications that help different audiences understand our work, impact, and role in the community.
    • Bring strong fluency in social media, digital storytelling, and audience engagement, helping shape content that works across owned channels, social platforms, newsletters, web, video, and other audience-facing formats.
    • Bring senior editorial judgment to fast-moving, sensitive, or high-profile communications, including leadership messages, statements, Q&A materials, remarks, and other content that requires clarity, accuracy, and careful tone.
    • Apply strong news and story judgment to community developments and public conversations, helpingidentifyrelevant themes, story opportunities, and content needs for UJA’s owned channels and leadership communications.
    • Shape video scripts, remarks, social-first content, and impact storytelling materials so they have a clear purpose, strong narrative arc,appropriate pacing, and audience value.
    • Coach writers and communications team members to strengthen story structure, clarity, tone, and editorial judgment.
    • Develop editorial standards, templates, formats, and writing practices that improve consistency and quality across the team.
    • Support editorial planning connected to UJA’s communications calendar, monthly themes, major campaigns, events, newsletters, social content, and priority initiatives.
    • Serve as a senior editorial advisor to the VP and senior leadership on editorial strategy, narrative structure, content priorities, and major communications products.
    • Use audience engagement data and feedback to evaluate major editorial products and recurring communications, applying those insights to strengthen content strategy, format, and audience value over time.
    • Work with communications, marketing, digital, social, fundraising, program, donor communications, video, and leadership teams to gather information, clarifypurpose,identify stories, and shape content.

    Qualifications:

      • Undergraduate degree required; graduate degree (MBA, MPA, or related field) an asset
      • 12+ years of experience in journalism, editorial leadership, strategic communications, content leadership, communications, or a related field.
      • 10+ years of experience writing, editing, or leading high-profile communications, editorial products, speeches, remarks, newsletters, video scripts, social or digital content, leadership communications, or other major content.
      • 7+ years of experience providing editorial direction, coaching writers, reviewing materials, improving written content, or leading editorial quality across a team.
      • 7+ years of experience working with senior leaders, executives, cross-functional teams, or complex stakeholder environments.
      • 5+ years of experience working on fast-moving, sensitive, high-profile, or deadline-driven communications.
      • 5+ years of experience shaping content for digital, social, or audience-engagement channels, with a strong understanding of how content performs across different platforms and formats.
        • Excellent writing, editing, story judgment, and audience instincts.
        • Strong judgment in complex, sensitive, fast-moving, or high-pressure environments.
        • Ability to translate complex information into clear, accessible strategic communications.
        • Strong planning and production instincts, with the ability to manage multiple priorities under deadline.
        • Ability to balance senior editorial leadership with hands-on writing and editing.
        • Strong attention to accuracy, tone, structure, and audience relevance.
        • Ability to write and edit across different formats, audiences, and levels of complexity.
        • Strategic thinker with the ability to assess situations and provide clear recommendations in a fast-moving environment.
        • Knowledge of or strong interest in the Jewish community and philanthropic landscape is an asset.

        * This is a full-time permanent position. Salary Range: $130,000–$140,000 annually, based on experience. At UJA we support a flexible work schedule and all of our employees engage in hybrid work.
