DEI and Social Justice Organizer

STATUS & WEEKLY HOURS: Part time- 10-12  hrs a week, with potential to grow

Rate: $20-30/hr depending on experience

Tribe 12’s mission is to connect people in their 20s/30s to Jewish life and community in Philadelphia today so they will choose to stay connected tomorrow.

Our programming includes social events, matchmaking services, an LGBTQIA+ community, affinity groups called Tribes, a Fellowship for entrepreneurs, and much more. We’re also intentional about being a true community resource, sharing community events on our website for the 20s/30s community and referring people to opportunities outside of Tribe 12. Our vision is that every person should have a path to finding others like them, creating their own meaningful experience with Judaism, and building Jewish community in our city - or wherever they may go.

How you’ll contribute:

You will take the lead in developing our social justice programming as well as supporting our general DEI initiatives.

Your primary work will include:

• Create a robust schedule of social justice programming and engage constituents in this work
• Co-lead our pilot social justice collaborative cohort (Fall 2022), including curriculum development, bringing in guest speakers, recruitment and community building
• Execute at least one additional event a month with a social justice or DEI focus.  Execution of events includes conceptualizing the event, entering the event into relevant systems,  organizing logistics for the event, advertising the event, implementing the event, and staffing the event.
• Use relevant social media, communication and relational engagement tools to ensure strong participation and involvement of constituents in social justice initiatives
• Meet with 6-8 constituents a month to engage folks in our community in social justice work
• Build relationships with social justice leaders in the local community, Jewish and general
• Help Guide Tribe 12 DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) efforts

This includes, but is not limited to:

• Work with our LGBTQ coordinator to Modify, guide, and execute the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion long-term plan for Tribe 12. This may include identifying and onboarding expert consultants, selecting, onboarding, and staffing a committee, and creating recommendations and subsequent programming or training at all levels of leadership at Tribe 12 (board, staff, alumni, volunteers). The work includes a plan for sustained viability of the project after the contract ends.
• Consult with Tribe 12 staff on Social Justice/DEI considerations with regard to regular marketing and programming.
• Work towards active inclusion/participation of Sephardi, Mizrachi, Jews of Color (SMJOC) and other diverse constituents in Tribe 12, including establishing a SMJOC Tribe, to be led by members of the SMJOC community.

Serve as a part time member of the Tribe 12 staff

• Attend staff meetings 1-2 times a month
• Attend large scale Tribe 12 programs approximately once a month
• Help make social justice an integral part of Tribe 12 culture

Additional and/or modified responsibilities may be developed according to organizational needs by agreement of both parties.

Support from Tribe 12 will include:

• Project budget for Social Justice/DEI work
• Additional budget may be available for special projects or programming as requested by the the social justice coordinator and determined by the Executive Director
• A budget of up to $500 for Consultant’s professional development and to attend networking opportunities
• Supervision and guidance from Tribe 12 senior staff
• Marketing and logistics support from Tribe 12 staff

• You thrive when you are facilitating conversations, recruiting and training volunteers, and creating other spaces for your peers to learn and develop their own ideas about issues that matter to them.
• You are an organizer and connector, ideally already connected in the Philly justice world, and ready to dive in deeper.
• You are comfortable with the idea that social change occurs through multiple modalities, including volunteering, education, organizing, philanthropy, activism and Jewish service learning.
• You are a skilled and empathetic communicator. You know how to tailor your message to your audience, and bring them into conversation about critical issues.
• You work well with a team but also take initiative and work well independently.
