The Opportunity:

In the aftermath of the deadliest antisemitic attack in the history of the United States of America, a new nonprofit formed in 2022 with the vision “to end antisemitism — together.” Bearing the name of the building where three congregations prayed on the morning of the October 27, 2018, attack (10/27), the mission of the newly established Tree of Life is to educate and inspire individuals and communities from across the nation to recognize and stand up against antisemitism through remembrance, experience, and action.

To fully achieve its vital vision, Tree of Life seeks an inaugural Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the new entity from its inception through a campaign to the opening and operation of a new building designed by world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind. The new Tree of Life will house one of the impacted congregations (the Tree of Life – Or L’Simcha Congregation), a museum, a memorial, and an array of national education programs, outreach initiatives, and events. Bringing strong business and financial acumen, the Chief Executive Officer will be the principal author of a strategic and results-oriented planning process to create the infrastructure for a sustainable model for future success.

The new Tree of Life seeks to be an emotional declaration of resilience and action in the face of hate and a memorial to lives lived and lost that will never be forgotten. The ideal CEO will be the face of the organization, both passionate and sensitive in representing the victims’ families, while bringing together the community, congregants, and an expanded Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, an integral partner, under the newly formed organization.

With a creative and consensus-building style, the CEO will serve as the front-line fundraising leader for the organization and bring proven ability and professional stature to cultivate high-capacity donors and institutional partners locally and nationally. The CEO will drive the organization’s REMEMBER. REBUILD. RENEW. comprehensive fundraising campaign in close collaboration with existing partners Lipton Strategies, as the campaign consultant, and the West End Strategy Team, for strategic communications. The campaign will publicly launch in late 2022.

Leading the fight against antisemitism and identity-based hate, the ideal candidate will bring an understanding of and interest in developing strong program content — creative concepts, ideas, and marketing collateral that will demand the attention of local, national, and international audiences. Working in collaboration with key partners and ultimately with programming experts on the team, the CEO will be pivotal in creating a legacy of resources for counteracting bias and antisemitism while also supporting Jewish culture, faith, spirituality, and ethics.

This is an unparalleled time and distinctive opportunity for a visionary leader to realize and achieve impact, unanimity, and connectivity blending professional goals with global impact in an inclusive center of gathering and excellence.

The Role:

The Chief Executive Office will serve as the inaugural chief executive for Tree of Life. In a time of change and growth, the CEO will be responsible for leading and managing the direction of the organization. As a leader with considerable management experience and understanding of institutional finances, they will develop a strategic plan that articulates Tree of Life’s vision and its commitment to ending the destructive forces of antisemitism and bias. To fulfill its ambitious mission of ending pervasive antisemitism and identity-based hate, Tree of Life requires an emotionally intelligent executive leader who will build the operational infrastructure and make strategic investments in talent to support the organization’s activity. Serving as the principal fundraiser, the CEO will bring their experience soliciting and closing six- and seven-figure gift commitments while working with an influential Campaign Cabinet. The CEO will lead Tree of Life’s REMEMBER. REBUILD. RENEW. campaign, while simultaneously building a broad base of sustainable philanthropic support.

By elevating community resilience, remembrance, and action and with an appreciation for Jewish culture, tradition, and values, the CEO will develop and support innovative programming that promotes an end to antisemitism and identity-based hate. Adept at developing relationships internally and externally, they will reinforce existing partnerships and forge new ones to elevate Tree of Life’s profile locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

The CEO must demonstrate the leadership skills necessary to galvanize the organization to support and execute its vision for the future. Tree of Life’s CEO must bring unimpeachable integrity, emotional maturity, excellent judgment, diplomacy, energy, decisiveness, a tolerance for ambiguity, and a pioneering spirit.
