Overview
The Junior Systems Administrator provides day-to-day operational support for the institution's systems, servers, cloud services, and enterprise applications. This role assists in maintaining reliable, secure, and efficient IT infrastructure across academic and administrative environments. The ideal candidate is technically curious, detail-oriented, and eager to grow into a mid-level systems administration role while supporting faculty, staff, and students.
Responsibilities
Responsible for general day-to-day systems and application support, to include, but not limited to as much of the following as possible:
- Assist with administration and monitoring of Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, file services, and group policies
- Support virtualized environments using Hyper V, including VM provisioning, monitoring, and basic troubleshooting
- Provide tier 1 and tier 2 support for enterprise platforms such as:
- Canvas
- CourseDog
- CampusGroups
- LearningSpace
- Assist in endpoint security and network protection using tools such as Bitdefender and Fortinet
- Support secure testing and academic platforms including ExamSoft
- Assist with wireless network infrastructure deployment, management, and troubleshooting
- Support and maintain print services
- Support identity and access management and MFA using Okta
- Assist with reporting and data visibility using Power BI
- Help manage and support AV control automation, broadcast, and production systems in recordings, classrooms, and event spaces
- Provision, configure, and maintain user accounts, access permissions, and security groups
- Respond to and document incidents, requests, and changes using ServiceNow, ensuring accurate and complete records
- Perform routine system updates, patching, backups, and health checks
- Troubleshoot user-reported system, application, and access issues
- Assist senior IT staff with infrastructure projects, upgrades, and deployments
- Create and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and knowledge base articles
- Identify recurring issues and recommend process or technical improvements
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer and Information Sci. preferred.
- Bachelor's Degree preferred or at least 2 years' experience.
- Basic to intermediate knowledge of Windows operating systems and server fundamentals.
- Understanding of virtualization concepts and system administration best practices.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and documentation skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple support requests.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Willingness to learn new technologies and platforms in a higher education setting.
- Experience with AV platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or similar.
- Understanding of video editing or basic multimedia production.
- Basic knowledge of cabling and signal flow for IT and AV systems.
- Exposure to higher education IT systems and learning management platforms.
- Familiarity with identity management, MFA, and security tools.
- Basic understanding of networking concepts (DNS, DHCP, VLANs).
- Experience with audio visual systems or classroom technology.
- Familiarity with scripting or automation (PowerShell preferred).
- Experience working in ticketing systems such as ServiceNow.
