The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life, a new model of community center designed to match the needs and spirit of the Jewish communities in Central and Northern Brooklyn, is hiring an Arts and Culture Senior Manager. Asylum Arts has been recently integrated into The Neighborhood. Over the past 9 years, Asylum Arts has built the largest curated network of Jewish and Israeli artists—nearly 700 multi-disciplinary creators from 29 countries, including many from Brooklyn. Asylum Arts is a laboratory for new Jewish culture, funding over 225 artists and supporting new art that has been viewed by over 1.3 million people in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East. Asylum Arts will be the key arts pillar for the new Jewish space and establish The Neighborhood as a center of Jewish arts programming in Brooklyn.

We’re seeking a full-time Arts and Culture Senior Manager based in Brooklyn, New York. We’re looking for a self-motivated, resourceful, socially intelligent, and detail-oriented person to join the start-up team. Working under the supervision of the Founding Director, the Arts and Culture Senior Manager will work on cultural events, artist community opportunities, fundraising including writing and reporting, artist grant management and tracking, digital and social media engagement, and overall work advancing the program goals.

Some Things You’ll Do in this Role:

Arts and Culture Programming:

  • Work with Founding Director and Board to articulate a coherent vision with a clear set of priorities for the development of The Neighborhood’s arts and culture programs
  • Work collaboratively with external organizational partners and artists to plan and execute events
  • Manage contacts with vendors, event staff, and volunteers

Community Management:

  • Work with Asylum Arts artists to maintain and build programs and opportunities to nurture and build existing and new relationships, both within the network and with The Neighborhood
  • Create and run alumni programming, both in-person and virtual
  • Maintain active correspondence with network artists regarding upcoming events, opportunities, important reminders, and other relevant information
  • Create and foster opportunities for local and international artists to work with Jewish organizations in Brooklyn and nationally

Fundraising

  • Support existing fundraising relationships for Asylum Arts programming
  • Coordinate with Founding Director on tracking and submitting grant reports and information, including gathering and tracking data
  • Track expenses and maintain arts and culture programming budget
  • Research and develop relationships with new potential donors, particularly with a local Brooklyn focus
  • Apply your creativity to developing compelling donor communications and engagement
  • Work with the Founding Director to brainstorm and implement ideas for cultivating and stewarding new and existing donors who are passionate about our cultural programming, particularly in Brooklyn
  • Format reports and grant applications

Artist Grants:

  • Manage online application processes, including invitations and open calls
  • Monitor and track grant progress
  • Manage grant application intake and prepare review materials

Digital Communications:

  • Manage and update online presence focusing on arts, including website, email communication, and social media channels
  • Manage communication with artist alumni and participants
  • Knowledge of Project Management software, Facebook Insights, Google Analytics, Photoshop, and InDesign strongly preferred

Some Things we are Looking For:

The ideal Senior Manager has a professional background, with robust experience that includes event planning, fundraising, grant management, community development, and social media fluency. The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and have experience in arts administration, ideally within a non-profit or cultural context. The successful candidate brings exceptional interpersonal communications across cultures, is highly organized, has polished written communications, and loves small details. Additionally, we’re looking for a candidate with knowledge of and comfort with web-based applications, Word, Excel and social media. Familiarity with Jewish culture and the arts in Brooklyn, and being a proactive and creative problem solver would also be assets for this position. The Neighborhood is an exciting start-up, with a small staff and board, and the ideal candidate is excited to be part of our growth process and understands that every task counts at a non-profit organization and ladders up to manifest the bigger picture. We do not yet have a physical space, so this staff person will help build from the ground up.

Some nights and weekends are required. Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.

The Neighborhood is building an organization and space that is welcoming and inclusive—for the Jewish community and our friends and neighbors. We believe that having a diverse staff is key to effectively building a pluralistic center for Jewish life with nuance and perspective. A more diverse group of people working behind the scenes makes us better at every stage of our growth and development. We strongly encourage people of all backgrounds, races, genders, and abilities to apply.

The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life is an equal opportunity employer.
