What you will be responsible for:

The part-time Executive Vice President will lead the Chicago Board of Rabbis (CBR) under the supervision of the CBR’s Executive Committee and CBR’s President. This role, as well as the part-time CBR Administrative Aide, is under the guidance of the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago (JUF). This role will work 15 hours per week, including at least one day in the office per week. The in office schedule will be reviewed after 90 days. The salary range for this role is $40,000-$45,000.

What you will be doing:

  • Work with the Officers and Executive Committee of the CBR to set policy and implement programs and serve as a trusted colleague available to be consulted by CBR members.
  • Communicate regularly with CBR President and Executive Committee, including weekly calls with the President and monthly committee meetings.
  • Oversee the office, administration, and communications of the CBR, including a biweekly newsletter and email requests from members.
  • Manage the team of rabbis who provide weekend religious services and classes at the Great Lakes Naval Base, including semi-annual preparation of a rotation schedule and planning and execution of annual volunteer training session in late July/early August.
  • Serve on the Council of Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago (CRLMC), participate/lead other interreligious activities, often with JUF’s Rabbinic Scholar and Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), and represent the rabbinate in civic and religious settings. This involves attending appropriate meetings including CRLMC monthly executive committee and full council meetings, JCRC meetings, and Catholic-Jewish Dialogue quarterly meetings.
  • Develop annual report including relevant CBR budget, data reports, and narrative summary and submit to JUF, following preview by the Executive Committee.
  • Serve as a reference for community members looking for rabbinic and synagogue services.
  • Supervise CBR part-time Administrative Aide who works 10 hours/week.

What you need to succeed:

  • 5-10 years of congregational experience or its equivalent.
  • Meets the membership requirement of the CBR.
  • Demonstrated experience with the following:
    • working within a strong organizational structure
    • working in interreligious activities
    • program development and implementation
    • working with a Board of lay leaders
    • working independently
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills, including public speaking in large and small groups.
  • Pluralistic orientation
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Jewish community, the Federation system, and Jewish communal services.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office Suite of Products.

Success in this role looks like:

  • Effective, ongoing communication and familiarity with Chicagoland rabbis.
  • 30-40 rabbis in attendance at CBR events.
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Jewish ecosystem of organizations and services to make connections for rabbis and community members.
  • Consistent presence of volunteer rabbis at Great Lakes Naval Base.
