LIFEGUARD POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Seasonal Lifeguard
Dept No: 505
Department: Aquatics
Personnel Code: Support Staff
Status: Non-Exempt
Supervisor: Aquatics Director

Position Summary:
The primary responsibility of the lifeguard is ensuring the safety and well-being of all persons using the pool. This is accomplished by enforcing all JCC policies, procedures, and rules, remaining alert, and being prepared to act in any emergency to prevent accidents.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain complete knowledge of Aquatics Manual policies and procedures
  • Major duties include:
  • Enforce all rules of the Jewish Community Center
  • Control crowds and maintain a safe swimming environment
  • Inform your supervisor of potentially dangerous situations
  • Be professional, alert, courteous, and tactful and remain prepared for emergencies
  • Perform rescues and provide First Aid when necessary
  • Report all injuries and rescues to the Aquatics Supervisor
  • Complete all required documentation immediately after any accident or incident; documentation must be descriptive, detailed, and accurate
  • Scan the entire area of responsibility every 20 seconds
  • Know emergency procedures for life-threatening and non-life-threatening situations
  • Respond first to any situation requiring First Aid or emergency action
  • Vacuum the pool daily
  • Refrain from unnecessary talking or visiting with members; refer lengthy questions to the supervisor
  • No eating, reading, or cell phone use, including texting, while on duty
  • Ensure all lifesaving equipment is in proper working order
  • Keep unauthorized personnel and equipment off the lifeguard stand
  • Be on time for scheduled shifts and participate in all in-service programs
  • Enforce pool security rules; members should enter through the Fitness Welcome Center or the pool gate
  • Lifeguards rotate every 30 minutes during Spring, Winter, and Fall and every 15 minutes in Summer; during down time check bathrooms, trash, and deck for cleanliness
  • Watch for weak swimmers and anticipate problem situations before accidents occur
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Knowledge and Education:

  • Standard First Aid, CPRPR, and Lifeguard training
  • Experience: None
  • Special Skills: Must pass a pre-employment skills test and be able to lift 50 lbs.
