Reports To: PrincipalFLSA Classification: Non-ExemptPosition PurposeThe Lower School Teaching Assistant helps support the comprehensive instruction across all subjects to students in a supportive and engaging environment, fostering academic growth and nurturing a love for learning. Assists the lead teachers with various administrative and clerical functions as requested. In the absence of a lead teacher, assumes the lead role in a designated classroom.QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor's degree in Education or relevant field.- Three years of experience working with children (independent school experience preferred, but not required)Essential Functions- An ability to build relationships with students that foster a positive classroom environment where students feel safe to make mistakes and take academic risks- Support and reinforce grade-level appropriate instruction aligned with The Davis Academy curriculum- Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills- Assist in creating a positive, engaging, and active learning environment- Provide constructive feedback and positive reinforcement to students- Support the lead teacher in maintaining accurate student records (attendance, grades, and other documentation)- Assist in implementing effective classroom management procedures- Supervise students during out-of-class activities, including emergency drills, assemblies, field trips, lunchtime, and recess- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development sessions, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops- Perform additional duties as assigned by the lead teacher or school administrationStudent Supervision & Support- Supervise students to ensure their safety, emotional well-being, and active participation throughout the school day.- Provide assistance during arrival and dismissal (e.g., helping with jackets, hats, backpacks, snacks, and water bottles).- Accompany students to and from special classes and other transitions.- Assist students with tying shoes, buttoning clothing, and other age-appropriate self-care needs.- Support students during snack and lunch times (e.g., opening containers, cutting food, encouraging healthy habits).- Engage students in hands-on activities, including puzzles, games, and tactile learning such as LEGO play.- Assist students during restroom use, if needed, while ensuring proper hygiene practices.- Sit on the floor and interact directly with students during play and learning activities.- Monitor inclusion, safety, and overall well-being throughout the school day.- Provide physical assistance in emergencies (e.g., lifting or carrying a student when necessary) in accordance with safety protocols.Instructional Support- Demonstrate and model correct letter formation, pencil/crayon/marker grip, and scissor use.- Support students in developing fine motor skills through tasks such as cutting, coloring, and tracing.- Accurately follow teacher directions and instructional strategies.- Provide classroom coverage and implement lesson plans when the lead teacher is absent.Classroom Preparation & Organization- Prepare classroom materials including photocopying, laminating, cutting, and organizing supplies.- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming classroom environment.- Take and print photos for class projects and documentation.Technology & Basic Skills- Utilize basic technology tools including Microsoft Office, interactive Smartboards, and Canva for classroom-related tasks.- Independently complete classroom-related hands-on tasks in a timely and efficient manner.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT- May work at a desk, computer, or floor for extended periods of time.- Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled classroom environment.- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
