Summary/Objective:
The Social Media Writer will collaborate with our Digital, Engagement and Outreach teams to craft compelling, social media-friendly content that connects diverse audiences to the First Amendment in strategic and engaging ways.
The Social Media Writer will research and produce social media-specific messaging that supports Freedom Forum’s mission to foster First Amendment freedoms for all. The primary objective of this position will be to envision, research and create social media content for a general audience that helps Americans better understand their First Amendment freedoms and how they relate to their lives every day.
The Social Media Writer will produce multiple forms of content (including, but not limited to, social media posts, short video scripts, advertising copy, landing page copy, and, occasionally, short-form articles) for use across social media and digital platforms, and will support our internal communications team.
This individual should be an exceptional writer and social media-minded communications professional with multimedia experience who can create engaging content designed to educate all Americans about their First Amendment freedoms.
Essential functions/responsibilities include but are not limited to:
The Social Media Writer will work with editorial, digital and social media colleagues to:
- Conceptualize, research, fact-check, and craft engaging copy for use across all social media platforms with a goal of reaching new and broad audiences with captivating First Amendment messages
- Conceptualize, research, fact-check, and write scripts for social media videos
- Support rapid response storytelling across social media platforms, including drafting short-form digital articles
- Write engaging copy for use in ads on our website, search engines, and social media
- Research, report and write short-form articles as assigned, ensuring they meet Freedom Forum’s standards for digital engagement
- Assist with program activations for Freedom Forum digital initiatives, from collaborative idea generation to final event completion
- Assist with development of new social media and digital initiatives, including writing and producing deliverables and related project management needs
- Follow the guidelines set by the Digital team and the Content Managing Editor
- Work with First Amendment experts to translate sometimes complex First Amendment issues for a general-interest, social media audience
- Assist with occasional editing
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- A passion for the First Amendment and Freedom Forum’s mission
- At least five years of multimedia communications experience, including digital storytelling, idea generating and writing
- Experience writing for a digital outlet which could include social media posts, video scripts, newsletters and/or site copy
- Responsiveness to and understanding of tight deadlines in a digital environment
- Excellent attention to detail, writing and copyediting skills
- Demonstrated skill at writing for a social media audience: simple language, short sentences, clarity and use of search engine optimization words
- Experience telling stories using social media and a multimedia portfolio that includes engaging digital storytelling using text, video, graphics and visuals
- A track record of effectively adapting to the changing media landscape and a readiness to learn how to write and create engaging content for new media platforms
- A willingness to dive into First Amendment issues and a desire to help explain those complex issues to diverse audiences
- Strong research skills and the ability to produce content on tight deadlines
- Ability to juggle multiple projects at a time, and to occasionally manage communication projects
- Flexibility to change course in a project
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams
- A self-starter who contributes original thinking and creative energy to our work, and who collaborates and understands the benefits of a strong editor and critical thinking
- Must have an adherence to journalistic standards of accuracy, fairness, nonpartisanship and attention to detail in producing content
Salary: The salary range for this position is $92,000 to $96,000 plus benefits.
Location: If DC-based, up to 10% onsite.
Requires up to 10% overnight travel.
