Director or Associate Director of Philanthropy
Temple Emanu-El is seeking a dynamic, relationship-driven Director or Associate Director of Philanthropy to help continue to grow a strong and sustainable culture of giving across our community. This is an opportunity to step into a congregation that is already deeply engaged and ready to build on our momentum.
The ideal candidate is a relationship builder who combines strategic thinking with strong execution, and brings energy, warmth, and joy to the work. This position reports to the Executive Director and partners closely with the Senior Rabbi, Controller, and lay leaders. Title will be commensurate with experience.
Primary Responsibilities
· Lead and execute all fundraising efforts, including a strong Annual Appeal, active Capital Campaign, and growing other giving opportunities such as Legacy Giving.
· Manage and grow a portfolio of donors; cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts, including major gifts.
· Build relationships with congregants and prospective donors through thoughtful outreach.
· Partner with clergy, staff, and lay leaders, including existing philanthropy chairs, to engage donors, solicit gifts and involve volunteers in philanthropy.
· Track progress, analyze results, and use data to guide strategy and decision-making.
· Oversee development operations, including donor systems, gift tracking, reporting, grants, and supervision of the Development Associate.
· Collaborate with Finance and Communications to ensure alignment, accuracy, and consistent messaging.
· Be a visible and engaged presence at key Temple events, special Shabbat services and community gatherings.
Experience and Qualifications
· Experience in fundraising with success in securing major gifts, sponsorships, grants, or institutional support.
· Strong relationship-building skills and ability to build trust and collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing donor communications and fundraising materials.
· Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects.
· Comfortable using technology and data to track progress, analyze results, and inform decisions.
· Familiarity with Jewish communal organizations or synagogue life preferred.
· Able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
This is an in-person role in Westfield, NJ, with some evening and weekend engagement as part of being present in community life.

Salary and Benefits
$90,000 - $140,000 salary, depending on experience. Includes health insurance, contribution to a retirement plan and paid time off. Employees receive a complimentary synagogue membership for those who wish to participate in congregational life. Employees with early childhood and/or school-aged children may also receive a significant discount on Temple educational programs, subject to availability.
