TEMPLE EMANU-EL

San Jose, California | Est. 1861

Facility Manager

About Us

Founded in 1861, Temple Emanu-El is the oldest synagogue in the South Bay — and one of its most vibrant. For over 160 years, we have enriched the spiritual and social lives of a diverse temple family through innovative programming, inclusive practices, and deep community engagement. Today, we remain as vital as ever, rooted in our Jewish heritage and values while growing to meet the needs of a dynamic congregation.

We are seeking an experienced Facility Manager to help us steward the physical home where that community life unfolds — a place of Shabbat celebrations, lifecycle milestones, learning, and gathering. If you take pride in a well-run, welcoming building and want your work to have real meaning, we'd love to hear from you.

The Role

Reports to: Executive Director | Supervises: Custodial Staff (1 FT + 1 Weekend)

The Facility Manager oversees the full care and security of our synagogue campus — sanctuary, social hall, classrooms, offices, kitchen, and grounds — ensuring a safe, welcoming environment for our congregation, staff, and guests every day of the week.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Operations

  • Develop and execute preventative maintenance schedules for all building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, security)
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergencies
  • Log and manage building equipment, tools, and service records

Custodial Supervision

  • Schedule, train, delegate to, and evaluate a team of 1 full-time and 1 weekend custodian
  • Conduct daily inspections and provide ongoing performance feedback
  • Oversee AV equipment setup; train custodians on use
  • Ensure safe chemical handling and waste compliance

Safety & Security

  • Enforce access control, alarm systems, and surveillance protocols
  • Serve as primary liaison with security guard, burglar alarm, and fire alarm vendors
  • Maintain all safety equipment and conduct regular compliance testing

Vendor & Budget Management

  • Solicit bids, negotiate contracts, and manage vendor relationships (landscaping, pest control, janitorial, service and repair, preventative maintenance)
  • Maintain records of contracts and insurance certificates
  • Manage the facilities budget; track expenses and identify cost savings, submit reports

Event & Community Support

  • Coordinate facility setup for weekly Shabbat, High Holidays, B’nai mitzvah, classes, and special events
  • Partner with event organizers to ensure seamless operations

Compliance & Sustainability

  • Ensure compliance with building codes, ADA requirements, and safety regulations
  • Maintain records of inspections and permits
  • Develop and implement energy-efficient and sustainable building practices

Who You Are

  • 5+ years of progressive facilities management experience, ideally in a nonprofit or faith-based setting
  • Strong working knowledge of building systems, maintenance procedures, and safety regulations
  • Proven supervisor with excellent prioritization and delegation skills
  • Experienced in vendor negotiation and budget management
  • Clear, professional communicator comfortable with staff, clergy, and community members alike
  • Proactive and detail-oriented — you notice what needs attention before anyone asks
  • Familiarity with Jewish holidays, lifecycle events, and customs is a meaningful plus
  • Proficient in Google Suite; working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work flexible hours including occasional evenings and weekends (especially during High Holidays and major events)
  • Must pass a background check

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time salaried position. Temple Emanu-El offers a competitive package including:

  • Salary: $75,000 – $85,000 depending on experience
  • Medical benefits
  • Paid holidays and paid time off
  • 403b retirement plan
  • A meaningful workplace with a close-knit, mission-driven community

Pay: $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year

Benefits:
