T’ruah is seeking a full-time Communications Manager who will implement our communications strategy.  T’ruah rabbis and cantors reach millions of people with their moral voices, and T’ruah’s Communications Manager will support them in doing so by drafting, editing, and tracking emails, social media posts, and other communications. This person will add value to the communications team by ensuring that external communications are clear, consistent, and in service of our organizational mission. 

This is an essential role for T’ruah. The Communications Manager will work closely with the program team, the development team, and the executive office to ensure our communications are timely, accurate, and effective in reaching the widest audience, powerfully disseminating our message and engaging more people over time. 

The ideal candidate has previous communications experience, is an excellent writer, has demonstrated attention to detail, can create systems to complete daily tasks and long term projects start to finish, and can do so both independently and in collaboration with others.

What You’ll Do

The Communications Manager reports directly to the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) and is responsible for the following:

  • Manage implementation of organization’s communications strategy; create compelling messaging to inform, inspire, and engage our audience, including rabbis and cantors, donors, and other stakeholders; exercise independent judgment and make decisions about prioritization of messages within our strategic framework

  • Project manage the editorial calendar; field communications requests from program and development staff, ensuring clear and timely communication about those requests; manage the timing of a high volume of social media posts, emails, and website updates weekly; track the progress of communications requests, keep tasks moving, and ensure they are completed on time

  • Follow and understand the details of T’ruah’s issue work; write about it in an accurate and compelling way that is tailored to different audiences; identify moments when specific modes of communication can be effective interventions

  • Collaborate with program and development staff to draft and finalize mass emails, action alerts, one-pagers, talking points, statements, social media posts, and updates to our website; track key metrics to determine the success of these communications

  • Use digital media to increase T’ruah’s reach and educate our community about our issues; work across departments to draft, finalize, and schedule social media posts; monitor our pages for questions and comments and respond as needed; monitor trending topics related to our issue areas; create graphics, slideshows, and simple social videos as needed

  • Proactively keep truah.org up to date and functional, including with current press releases, media, events, and actions; work with our web developers to solve Wordpress technical issues; source and edit images; follow best practices for accessibility; and track and report traffic and downloads

  • Maintain updated marketing collateral; keep T’ruah’s photo and video archives up to date by gathering media during and after events; track T’ruah’s media requests and appearances 

  • Serve as a thought partner to the Chief Communications Officer on how to strengthen communications and build communications thinking across our teams

  • Great writing, including previous professional communications experience writing and editing

    • You write clear, concise copy and convey information simply and directly, choosing words and phrases that will be easily understood by the broadest audience possible

    • You can adapt your writing to suit the needs of different audiences and authors if drafting on their behalf

    • You can tailor copy to fit the needs of a specific platform (social media/ email/website) as needed

    • You use correct grammar and spelling 

  • Excellent attention to detail, including copy editing experience

    • You do not miss fine details and have systems to support you in doing so

    • You can copy edit your own and others’ writing with a keen eye for typos, organizational style, and toward inclusive, people-first language

    • You double check all communications before they go public

  • Connecting smaller tasks to the larger goals and vision

    • You have effective tools to support time management and prioritization of tasks, so you can see small and large projects through from start to finish

    • You take a big-picture view of content, thinking about how it will be perceived by our audience, anticipating possible confusion and suggesting ways to ensure clarity

    • You are comfortable working independently on projects and collaboratively on teams

  • Communicating with care and dignity, giving and receiving feedback

    • You are comfortable providing feedback on writing and projects to peers, vendors, and people we work with, including rabbis and cantors

    • You communicate relationally and with care for those on the other end of the communication, no matter the subject 

    • You receive feedback with understanding that feedback is essential to growth

  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and racial justice

    • You consider how communications will impact our diverse audience, including Jews of Color

    • You reach out proactively and build relationships to create more welcoming communication for marginalized members and would-be members over time

    • You are proactive about getting permission for testimonials and images featuring marginalized members and partners

Additional Competencies and Experience:

  • Understanding and promoting T’ruah’s mission and priorities

    • You are enthusiastic about representing T’ruah’s mission, campaigns, and positions.
  • Basic Hebrew and/or background in Jewish text is needed to succeed in this job as it requires editing and understanding Hebrew phrases and editing texts that include transliterated Hebrew and translations of phrases

  • While not required, experience with the following key systems would position you to get up to speed quickly: Wordpress, Salsa Engage, Salesforce, Canva, Buffer

Eligibility

You must be legally eligible to work in the United States.

Status

This is a salaried, exempt, full-time position (i.e., 40 hours per week)

Salary

The starting salary range for this full-time position is $60,000 - $85,000 per year 

We set salary through a collaborative process using a standard rubric based on years of experience.  

Benefits include:

  • T’ruah pays for 100% of the employee’s premium and 50% of one dependent’s premium on our recommended medical insurance plan

  • Employer-covered basic life and AD&D insurance valued at $10,000

  • Optional benefit plans available at employee expense: dental, vision, health savings account, health care flexible spending account, dependent care flexible spending account, supplemental life insurance, and supplemental AD&D insurance

  • Automatic employer contributions of an amount equal to 3% of your salary to your 403(b) retirement account beginning one year after the date of hire – whether or not you make elective deferral contributions

  • 15 vacation days a year in your first year of employment, increasing to 20 days a year at the start of your second year of employment

  • 34 holidays a year, which includes Jewish and most Federal holidays, Summer Fridays, and a floating holiday

  • Paid leave of up to 12 weeks for the birth or adoption of a child

Location

While the position can be filled by someone working remotely, we do have a strong preference for the position to be filled by someone in the New York City metro area. Those living in the New York City metro area will have our New York City office at their disposal.

Travel

We expect you to have the ability to travel to occasional in-person meetings in various U.S. locations.
