Description

The Staenberg-Loup Jewish Community Center of Denver is seeking a full-time employee with high energy, experience, and passion to work on the camps team supporting year-round programming for children entering Kindergarten through 10th grade. The Assistant Director of Camper Wellness will directly work with the Camp Shai team to support their day camp programs in the summer as well as their School’s Out! programs during the school year.

The Assistant Director of Camper Wellness is primarily responsible for providing oversight and expertise for Camp Shai’s inclusion and character development programming to maximize the accessibility of our programs and to deepen the experience that each camper enjoys through our programs.

Camp Shai is looking for someone to create accommodations to meet the individual needs of children with and without identified needs through tools and strategies such as:

  • Camper Intakes: Pre-Enrollment meetings with families and their children to identify what accommodation might be available to create a successful camp experience
  • Camper Care Plans: Tangible Care Plans that will prepare seasonal staff to facilitate necessary modifications and create a supportive environment for development and growth
  • Staff Training: Specialized training for seasonal staff to understand and support inclusive and restorative behavior management practices
  • Observations and Technical Assistance: Surveying program curriculum, activity flow, camp environment, and other factors to determine methods to push camp and seasonal staff closer to inclusivity
  • Seasonal Staff Supervision

Role and Responsibilities

Program Development & Oversight

  • Communicate and oversee inclusion policies at Camp Shai and School’s Out!
  • Engage and facilitate programming to promote positive youth development
  • Design and implement character-based programming including but not limited to: community-service projects, specialized Juneteenth programs, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Programs on the design and implementation of curriculum during School’s Out! programs
  • Supervise and develop Camp Shai’s Ozrim/Counselor-in-Training program and help oversee its implementation in the summer
  • Collaborate with the Early Learning School (ELS) on the development of kindergarten readiness resources

Direct Service & Leadership

  • Develop care plans for campers as requested and ensure shared information between Camp Shai and JCC’s Ranch Camp for any shared participants
  • Support with direct supervision of campers and staff supervision during School’s Out! programs
  • Support in crisis intervention during Camp Shai and School’s Out! programs
  • Coach and provide technical assistance to seasonal staff to implement best strategies for children with challenging behaviors or identified needs
  • Use written and/or verbal communication with families regularly to share pertinent information about campers’ mood and behavior, as well as any program updates
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Programs on any accommodations or program considerations to make services more accessible and inclusive
  • Support and implement regular evaluations for all seasonal staff
  • Assist in all ACA and Licensing Accreditations and visits ensuring complete and accurate documentation of all program areas and compliance with safety standards

Hiring, Supervision, & Management

  • Support in an annual review of hiring practices, seasonal job descriptions, and screening & interview tools
  • Assist in the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of seasonal staff for summer and School’s Out! positions
  • Directly supervise Unit Heads and Camper Care Coordinators during the summer season
  • Provide supervision, oversight, and support for seasonal staff members as assigned.
    • May include overseeing employee contracts and performance reviews as requested by the Camp Director
  • Collaborate with the Camp Director team to support the facilitation of regular training for seasonal staff members

Outreach, Communication, & Marketing

  • Collaborate with the Camp Director team on recruitment strategy for both campers and seasonal staff
  • Utilize CampMinder and other software programs to provide strong customer service to families enrolling in Camp Shai and School’s Out!
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with children and families for all youth programming through in-person interactions, parent/guardian emails, phone calls, e-blasts, online presence, school visits, meet and greets, and other community outreach events

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Manage CRM system (CampMinder) for reporting, enrollment, and camper needs tracking
  • Coordinate with Camp Registrar to ensure accurate and timely follow-up communications to schedule intake calls with interested families
  • Manage program budget and ensure spending is within the approved amount toward the department’s annual budget
  • Oversee the Camp Shai email inbox and coordinate with the Camp Director team to ensure that all parties are receiving a timely response to their inquiries
  • Coordinate with Registrar to track which enrollments have been approved after a successful intake
  • Support the Assistant Director of Programs in communication and marketing of programs via email, social media, and phone calls
  • Maintain camper and staff records, as well as facility requirements, to comply with Colorado’s childcare licensing regulations
  • Manage, document, and evaluate any program objectives related to inclusion-specific grant funding
  • Collaborate with the General Manager of Camps to support and identify other potential funding opportunities for inclusion or character development at camp

State Licensing & American Camping Association (ACA) Accreditation

  • Be familiar with and uphold all Colorado State Childcare licensing requirements for school-based childcare programs
  • Be familiar with and uphold all American Camping Association requirements for day camps

Other Duties

  • Must be able to drive company vehicles with and without children on- and off- site for programming

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Physical Demands: This job requires personnel to have operative auditory and visual functioning. Employee must also be able to walk upwards of two miles each day, including the use of stairs and uneven terrain. Employee may also stand, sit in chairs or on the ground, run, and swim. Mental requirements include, but are not limited to, the ability to concentrate, effectively cope with stress, adapt to and stay alert in a professional environment, as well as an ability to problem solve and de-escalate crisis situations and challenging behaviors. Qualifications and Education Requirements

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must hold at least 5 years of verifiable experience working with children
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Special Education, Social Work, or other related field
  • Must hold a valid First Aid & CPR certification. Opportunities for certification will be made available through the JCC prior to the start of each summer season
  • Must be able to fulfill requirements for employment at the Staenberg-Loup JCC, including background screening, three professional references, documentation, and compliance with CDHS law

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Education, Special Education, Social Work, or other related field
  • Previous leadership or supervision experience
  • Previous experience in a day camp or residential camp setting

Full-Time employees of the JCC are considered benefits-eligible.

The JCC contributes a portion of medical, dental, and vision plan premiums. The JCC proudly pays for 100% of Basic Life Insurance, AD&D, Short-Term Disability, and Long-Term Disability coverage for benefits eligible employees. We also provide additional voluntary benefit plans.
