Description

The Production and Technical Manager plays a vital leadership role in delivering a world-class cultural and theatrical experience at the Mizel Arts and Culture Center. This position combines strategic production planning with hands-on technical direction, ensuring seamless execution of all events, performances, and rentals. The role is responsible for production management, technical operations, budget oversight, and staff supervision for both internal programming and external rentals.

The Mizel Arts and Culture Center is a 501 (c) 3 within JCC Denver that resides on the JCC main campus. Mizel Center employees work for the JCC Denver and are benefits eligible.

Weekend and evening hours are required.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Production Management & Planning
    • Develop, manage, and execute production schedules (rehearsals, load-ins/outs, performances)
    • Coordinate with Program Director to establish and track production budgets, estimates, and billing
    • Secure rights for mainstage productions and manage related compliance
  • Technical Leadership
    • Oversee all backstage operations and ensure the safety and success of all technical activities
    • Provide technical support for Mizel and JCC events, including setup, operation, and breakdown
    • Maintain all lighting, sound, scenic, and A/V equipment, including licensing and warranties
    • Advance production requirements with renters and program partners
  • Staff & Crew Supervision
    • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise all technical staff, including overhire crew, designers, and interns
    • Serve as the primary contact for technicians during productions, rentals, and internal events
    • Develop safety and production training for internal and external users
  • Facility & Operations Oversight
    • Manage theatre maintenance, housekeeping, and security needs
    • Coordinate walk-throughs, rehearsals, and technical tours for potential rentals
    • Create and implement standard operating procedures in collaboration with Mizel management
    • Ensure adherence to OSHA and other safety regulations
  • Community & Collaboration
    • Partner with JCC departments on cross-functional programs and events
    • Represent the Mizel Center in partner relationships and vendor negotiations
    • Lead technical facility tours and act as liaison for equipment rentals and client onboarding

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in theatre production and technical direction, preferably in a multi-use arts facility
  • Strong leadership and project management skills
  • In-depth knowledge of theatrical systems (lighting, sound, rigging, etc.)
  • Ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on technical work
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with budgeting, scheduling, and safety compliance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or greater in Technical Theater or related field;
  • Supervisory experience; especially as a Production Manager or Technical Director;
  • Comfortable with an ETC Ion XE light board, Allen & Heath SQ-7 sound board, Behringer X32 sound board and basic knowledge of QLab software or comparable equipment and systems;
  • Experience troubleshooting lighting, audio and video equipment;
  • Comfortable with hand and power tools;
  • Comfortable working with artists, children, families, and rental clients;
  • Knowledge of safety and security rules and regulations; and
  • Lighting, sound, video, or scenic design experience;
  • Experience with virtual meeting and live streaming platforms such as Zoom, YouTube, OBS, mimoLive, or similar programs.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

While performing duties, the candidate is occasionally required to stand for long periods of time. This candidate will also use their hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. Candidates must occasionally lift, team lift, and/or move upwards of one hundred (100) pounds.
