Position Summary

The Camp Doctor or Nurse Practitioner serves as the primary medical professional for our residential overnight camp community. Living on-site throughout the camp season, the Camp Doctor oversees all health care operations, ensures compliance with state and American Camp Association (ACA) standards, and partners closely with senior staff to promote camper well-being.

This role requires both clinical expertise and a warm, reassuring presence that reflects Camp Sabra’s values of community, responsibility, and care.

Medical Leadership

• Provide assessment and treatment for camper and staff illnesses and injuries

• Make decisions regarding outside medical care, urgent care visits, or hospital referrals

• Maintain complete and confidential health documentation

Medication & Health Management

• Monitor allergies, chronic conditions, dietary restrictions, and mental health needs

• Ensure compliance with Missouri state regulations and ACA accreditation standards

• Support infection control and communicable illness prevention

  • Call in prescriptions for campers and staff as needed

Emergency Response

• Serve as primary medical responder for emergencies

• Coordinate with local emergency services when necessary

• Develop and implement health and safety protocols

• Provide guidance on hydration, heat safety, waterfront precautions, and activity-related risk management

Community Partnership

• Communicate with parents/guardians regarding medical concerns when appropriate

• Partner with the Camp Director, Assistant Directors, and Unit Heads

• Support the overall camper experience while balancing safety and independence

Qualifications

Qualifications - Ability to practice in Missouri during camp season

• MD or DO with current, active medical license

  • Or Licensed Nurse Practitioner

• Current CPR/AED certification

Essential Physical Requirements

Mobility & Ambulation

  • Ability to walk long distances across uneven terrain (hills, gravel paths, wooded areas, waterfront, athletic fields).
  • Ability to move quickly in response to medical emergencies.
  • Ability to climb stairs and access multi-level cabins or buildings.
  • Ability to access remote camp locations, including waterfront and activity areas.

Standing & Sitting

  • Ability to stand for extended periods during clinic hours or while supervising care.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while documenting in medical records or reviewing charts.

Lifting & Carrying

  • Ability to lift and carry medical supplies and equipment (up to approximately 100 pounds).
  • Ability to assist in transferring or stabilizing patients when necessary.
  • Ability to push or pull emergency equipment (e.g., stretcher, emergency cart).

Manual Dexterity

  • Sufficient hand and finger dexterity to:
    • Perform medical examinations
    • Administer injections
    • Suture wounds
    • Operate diagnostic and emergency equipment
    • Utilize electronic health record systems

Vision & Hearing

  • Adequate visual acuity (with or without correction) to:
    • Read medication labels and charts
    • Assess injuries and physical symptoms
  • Ability to hear and respond to verbal communications, alarms, and emergency calls (with or without accommodation).

Environmental Tolerance

  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions including heat, humidity, rain, and varying temperatures.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to common camp environmental factors such as insects, dust, pollen, and animal dander.

Emergency Response Capacity

  • Ability to provide timely emergency medical care.
  • Ability to remain physically and mentally capable during prolonged or high-stress situations.
  • Ability to work flexible and extended hours, including nights and weekends, as required in an overnight setting.
