Summary:

The J’s Youth Theatre JUNIORS is seeking a Costumer for its [Fall 2025] production of Alice In Wonderland JR.

JUNIORS is an educational performance-based program for ages 8-15. Students meet weekly to rehearse for their end of semester performance. The emphasis is on building confidence, taking ownership of their place in the production, following direction, working as a team, and growing performing art skills.

The Costumer will work 75 hours each semester at a rate of $15/hour including being present at agreed upon rehearsals for measuring/fitting as well as production meetings and additional remote hours for sewing and costuming preparation. Attendance at all technical and dress rehearsals along with performances is required. Rehearsals begin August 17, 2025 with performances the week of December 7.

Responsibilities:

  • Work together with the Producer, Director, and Technical Director to understand artistic vision and develop a costume plot for the production.
  • Design, acquire, or create costumes for the production keeping in mind artistic vision, needs of cast and the assigned budget.
  • Maintain classroom management and communicate with age-appropriate language to the students the instructions for how to be good stewards of their costumes.
  • Help the students understand that costume choices are determined by the Costumer, Director, and Producer.
  • Make strategic costume choices to both pull from the J’s costume stock and to help build the stock.
  • Responsible for all costuming, including alterations, repairs, and building costumes if needed.
  • Work with the Producer and Director on determining timelines and when costumes pieces should be ready.
  • Communicate needs with Producer and Director including any instructions for the cast.
  • Along with Director, ensure all materials are gathered and put away after rehearsals and performances.
  • Responsible for strike of costumes at close of production. Materials must be inventoried and returned.
  • Know and understand all safety procedures of the J. Lead the participants in the event of an emergency.
  • Attend all training and meetings as required. Attend all rehearsals and performances.
  • Assist in monitoring backstage and the dressing rooms throughout performance week.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • College degree in a related field is preferred.
  • One or more years of previous costuming experience is required or several years of theatre experience across disciplines.
  • Must be available for repairs and alterations throughout production.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Patience and ability to deal with multiple priorities at one time.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of online organization tools (Google Workspace, Trello, etc)
