About the Job

Support counselors are additional support for campers with disabilities. All Support Counselors will be assigned to campers within a group, based by grade (Kindergarten-6th grade). Depending on the level of support each child needs, Support Counselors will help between 1-3 campers

You’ll wow us by masterfully performing the following key duties and responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Disability & Inclusion Youth Manager to provide direct, positive, and meaningful supports and accommodations to designated supported campers, including but not limited to sharing visual daily schedules, facilitating timed breaks, and facilitating social interaction
  • Work with bunk counselors and activity specialists to increase accessible opportunities in activities specific to designated supported campers’ needs?
  • Communicate daily with the Disability & Inclusion Youth Manager on supported campers’ successes and their opportunities for growth, including ideas on making the camp environment accessible for designated supported campers
  • Support Counselors must participate in all activities with campers, including being changed out in swimwear and in the swimming pool during swim programs
  • Submit all paperwork necessary, including written incident reports, accident reports, and daily communication with camper families
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Eligible candidates must be at least 18 years old. Eligible candidates also must have graduated from High School or obtained a GED by the start of camp. Experience with children with disabilities is preferred. JCamps staff are required to pass all criminal history background checks, including an FBI fingerprint check. They must also obtain a current CPR and First-Aid certification.
  • Support Counselors are based out of the JCamps Office but will be expected to execute daily responsibilities throughout Shalom Austin’s campus. Support Counselors will use specific areas as a home base for the bunk their campers are in. Due to the nature of the position, Support Counselors must be able to be on their feet for most of the day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds. Support Counselors must have the ability to be outside and handle Austin summer heat.
  • This position is a seasonal full-time position. The expected hours are from 8AM-4PM Monday through Friday, with opportunities to work until 5:30. Seasonal work begins with the first day of orientation on May 31 and goes through July 31 with opportunities to work through August 14. Hours are subject to change based on the camp’s needs.
