What does an After School Camp Counselor do?

Counselors, along with their co-counselors, will work with a group of children each afternoon to lead them through afterschool activities in the JCamps After School Program. Counselors are assigned to either our Kindergarten or 1st-5th grade groups, depending on the day. As a group leader and facilitator, the Counselor is responsible for day-to-day programming and supervision of their group. The Counselor should work to meet the needs of all children in their group and the program as a whole. Our program accepts all children where they are, and Counselors should strive to be inclusive and sensitive to the program goals of inclusivity, building healthy relationships, and providing fun, meaningful activities, and interactions. Counselors will also help with transportation from schools near the program, which includes driving a 15-passenger van. Working hours are 2:30pm-6:00pm, 5 days a week (with the possibility of a 3-day per week schedule).

Responsibilities include:

  • Ability to drive a 15-passenger van to transport children (required).
  • Go to local elementary schools every afternoon to pick-up children (vehicle transportation provided).
  • Manage the daily routine and activities for the assigned group.
  • Accountability for children’s’ emotional needs, health, and safety at all times.
  • Implementing group activities, crafts, and projects.
  • Maintaining accurate rosters of children in group.
  • Daily cleaning measures such as sanitizing surfaces, bathrooms, and other necessary materials and supplies.
  • Maintain a constructive attitude and positive communication with the administrative staff, fellow counselors, and children.
  • Follow emergency management and safety policies.
  • Encourage and model respect for personal space, equipment, and facilities.

Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Driving experience is required. You will be trained on driving our 15-passenger vans prior to transporting any children.
  • Possess enthusiasm, patience, a great sense of humor, a strong work ethic, positivity, and the ability to work well on a team and with children.
  • Pass all required criminal history background checks (including an FBI fingerprint check).
  • Adhere to our Mission, Core Values, and all HR policies and procedures.

Compensation and Benefits

  • We’ll pay you an hourly salary of $15.00-$17.00 per hour, depending on experience and education.
  • No nights or weekend work.
  • Free Dell JCC Membership (pool, gym, etc.).
