About B'ShERT

B'ShERT is a Reform Jewish synagogue in Brooklyn with a history over 100 years long. B'ShERT is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming spiritual home regardless of where families may be on their Jewish journeys. B'ShERT officially formed in July 2018, when the communities of Temple Beth Emeth v'Ohr Progressive Shaari Zedek and Progressive Temple Beth Ahavath Sholom consolidated into a new entity. B'ShERT enthusiastically welcomes members of all Jewish traditions, families of multiple faith backgrounds, LGBTQ+ members, differently abled members, and those who simply wish to learn and experience our warm and friendly community. We support students in developing a strong connection to Judaism.

About the Religious School

B'ShERT's religious school philosophy focuses on instilling a love of Judaism in our students.

B'ShERT's religious school meets in person once a week on Saturday mornings. Then, during the weekdays, students learn Hebrew decoding skills remotely on Zoom with a Hebrew teacher, with 1–2 students per session. This is a part-time position of five or fewer hours per week, running ASAP through mid-June 2027.

Essential Duties

• Teach Hebrew lessons on Zoom using provided curriculum materials, focusing on decoding skills, tefillah reading skills, and Modern Hebrew as needed.
• Differentiate provided curriculum materials to support all learners.
• Collaborate with the Education Director and Rabbi to support students as they prepare for the brit-mitzvah (bar/bat/bnei/b'mitzvah) process.
• Track and document student progress after each lesson, as guided by the Education Director.
• Attend occasional faculty meetings (dates TBD).

Required Qualifications

• Hebrew proficiency (fluent speaking ability preferred)
• Weekday afternoon availability
• Classroom teaching experience or experience working with children (camp, in-classroom teaching, after-school programming)
• Belief in belonging for all—everyone belongs at B'ShERT
• Weekday afternoon availability (less than 5 hours a week)
• Ability to teach on Zoom

Compensation: $50–$55 per hour, depending on experience
