Director of Operations

Organization: The Brotherhood Synagogue, Gramercy Park, New York, NY

Reports to: Board President in close partnership with the Rabbi

Status: Full-time, exempt, primarily on-site; schedule flexibility required for major events and holidays

Salary range: $100,000 - $140,000

Benefits: Benefits include access to medical and dental coverage, 403b savings plan, commuter benefits, vacation and sick leave, synagogue membership, and professional development.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Director of Operations to take ownership of how the synagogue runs day to day, facilities, staff, finances, technology, and systems.

This is a role for someone who is energized by making things work: closing the gap between a good idea and a well-executed event, replacing an ad hoc process with a reliable one, and being the person others trust to have already thought about the details. You will work alongside clergy, the Board, committees, staff, and a large and engaged volunteer corps.

What You'll Do

Operations and systems

  • Lead the synagogue's daily operations, administrative functions, and office staff.
  • Build and document systems and workflows that improve efficiency, communication, and Coordinate operational support for worship services, holidays, lifecycle events, programs, facility rentals, and Board activities.

People

  • Supervise designated operational staff (excluding clergy and education staff), including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Serve as a trusted operational partner to clergy, lay leadership, committees, and volunteers.

Facilities and safety

  • Oversee the building: maintenance, vendors, capital projects, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Manage security, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance in coordination with relevant partners and agencies.

Finance and administration

  • Partner with the Vice President of Finance and the Budget Committee on budgeting, purchasing, contracts, and financial reporting.
  • Negotiate and manage vendor relationships and service agreements.

Technology

  • Oversee synagogue technology, audiovisual systems, and IT vendors, including livestream support for services.
  • Supervise the staff or contractor responsible for the synagogue's digital communications and social media.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • 7+ years of operations, facilities, or nonprofit management experience, including direct supervision of staff
  • Demonstrated success managing budgets, vendors, and physical space
  • Strong project management skills—you can run several things at once without dropping any of them
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, and sound judgment with sensitive information
  • Comfort partnering with volunteers and lay leadership, where influence matters more than authority
  • Solid technology skills and genuine interest in improving organizational systems

Preferred

  • Experience in a synagogue, church, school, or other mission-driven nonprofit
  • Familiarity with Jewish life, the Jewish calendar, and synagogue operations
  • Experience with membership or CRM databases, facilities management software and AV systems

Brotherhood Synagogue is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, races, national origins, ages, abilities, sexual orientations, and gender identities.

About Brotherhood Synagogue

Brotherhood Synagogue sits on Gramercy Park and is the largest Jewish congregation in downtown Manhattan, with 800 member households and roughly 150 children in our Hebrew school. We are an independent, progressive community rooted in the Conservative tradition — a combination that lets us honor the spiritual and ethical heritage of Judaism while celebrating the range of people who call this place home.

On any given week our building holds Shabbat services, b'nei mitzvah celebrations, adult earning, children's classes, social justice work, community meals, and life's hardest and happiest moments. Keeping all of that running well is the job we are hiring for.

This is primarily a full-time, weekday position with a traditional business-hours schedule. However, synagogue life does not always happen between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and the Director of Operations must have the flexibility to adjust their schedule when the needs of the congregation require it.

The Director will be expected to be present for major synagogue events and key moments in the Jewish calendar, including the High Holy Days and other significant services, programs, or community events. This may occasionally require evening, weekend, or holiday hours.

We recognize that flexibility works both ways. Compensatory days and flexible scheduling are available when significant responsibilities fall outside the regular workweek, and the Director will work with synagogue leadership to maintain a reasonable and sustainable schedule.
