Position Summary
Merrick Jewish Centre seeks a dynamic, organized, and community-focused Administrative Director to oversee the daily operations and administrative functions of the synagogue. The Administrative Director serves as a key leader, collaborating closely with clergy, staff, lay leadership, and congregants to ensure the smooth operation of the organization while supporting its mission, programs, and long-term growth. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, financial management, communication, and organizational skills, along with a commitment to fostering a welcoming and vibrant Jewish community.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership
- Serve as a professional representative of Merrick Jewish Centre.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the synagogue.
- Partner with clergy, the Board of Directors, and committee leaders to implement strategic goals and initiatives.
- Provide administrative leadership and operational oversight to support congregational programs and services.
- Ensure effective communication among staff, leadership, congregants, and community partners.
Financial Administration
- Coordinate day-to-day financial administration, including processing invoices and payments, supporting member billing and collections, providing payroll information, and working with MJC’s bookkeeper and other financial service providers as needed.
- Support the annual budgeting process and assist with tracking expenditures against approved budgets.
- Assist with fundraising initiatives, membership development, and donor relations.
Staff Management
- Supervise administrative, maintenance, and support staff.
- Foster a professional, collaborative, and positive workplace culture.
- Ensure compliance with employment policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
Facilities and Operations
- Oversee building operations, maintenance, security, and vendor relationships.
- Coordinate facility usage for religious services, educational programs, special events, and community activities.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and operational regulations.
Membership and Community Engagement
- Support membership recruitment, retention, and engagement initiatives.
- Serve as a welcoming and responsive point of contact for congregants and visitors.
- Manage and coordinate synagogue calendars across multiple departments and programs.
- Assist in planning and coordinating synagogue events, programs, communications, and community outreach efforts, including social media engagement.
- Strengthen relationships with community organizations and key stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree: Preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
- Leadership experience: Minimum of 3-5 years in nonprofit management, religious institution administration, or a related field.
- Financial management skills: Strong financial management and budgeting skills.
- Communication abilities: Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Team supervision: Demonstrated experience supervising and leading teams.
- Technical proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database management systems.
- Knowledge of synagogue operations: Knowledge of synagogue operations and Jewish communal life is preferred.
- Priority management: Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
