Temple Sinai Palm Desert, CA "Where Judaism Blooms in the Desert"
Temple Sinai of Palm Desert, a Reform congregation in the Coachella Valley (near Palm Springs, CA), is looking for an Religious School education director/teacher. The position is part time for 30 sessions with classes beginning September 20, 2026. The school operates on Sundays from September-May 10 AM-12:15 PM. Additional hours are available for planning lessons, collaborating with the school’s teachers and the rabbi.
Our school welcomes students from grades K-6 from across the Coachella Valley whether their parents are congregants or not. We cover all aspects of Jewish life-prayers, Torah, culture, art, history and more. Our school gives Jewish children in the valley the opportunity to spend time with other Jewish children. Our rabbi regularly participates in the school.
You will be responsible for:
School Leadership and Teaching
Supervise, support and evaluate religious school teaching staff; in collaboration with the Rabbi ensure effective curriculum, programming, and instruction for all aspects of school
Teach in the school, utilizing the temple library
Recruit and supervise madrachim/student aides
Plan and attend the Chanukah and Purim family services
Administration
Establish a school calendar
Oversee student registrations with the Sinai administrator
Maintain proper record keeping with up to date enrollment
Create and send two personalized student progress reports (midyear and end of year) to parents (with input from teachers).
Communicate with families on regular basis
Respond to requests from the rabbi or the administrator in a timely manner
Participate in Sinai staff meetings
Provide a written report monthly to the rabbi of school attendance, program updates, school needs and areas of concerns.
Write monthly article for the Sinai bulletin
Qualifications
Would appreciate, but not necessary, experience teaching in Jewish education, youth education, camp, Hebrew school, day school, family education, or related settings
Knowledgeable about Jewish holidays, rituals, history, Torah, prayer, values, and spirituality
Comfort teaching in a Reform Jewish environment
Compensation
We offer a competitive hourly rate and the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment. This is a part-time hourly position of $35-$40/hour for three to four hours of work on Sunday morning plus prep time during the weeks when school is in session. Additional compensation is provided for attending staff meetings and other times requested.
