The Accounting Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day financial operations of the synagogue, ensuring accurate financial records, timely reporting, and proper handling of synagogue-specific accounting activities. This role requires a highly organized, detail-oriented individual who can work independently.
The ideal candidate will have experience with nonprofit and/or fund accounting, strong QuickBooks knowledge, and the ability to manage multiple financial responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting & Bookkeeping
- Maintain accurate financial records in QuickBooks
- Record and reconcile all bank, credit card, and investment account activity
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Process payroll
- Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts
- Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules
- Support budgeting and forecasting processes
- Assist with internal controls and financial procedures appropriate for a small organization
- Work independently while communicating proactively with leadership
- Monitor cash flow, upcoming obligations, and operating liquidity
- Participate in audit/review activities, tax filings and year-end reporting
Membership Billing & ShulCloud Administration
- Manage synagogue billing processes through Schulcloud
- Prepare and maintain membership dues billing, tuition billing, pledges, donations, and payment plans
- Process and reconcile member payments and online transactions
- Monitor and troubleshoot synchronization between ShulCloud and QuickBooks
- Work with synagogue staff to ensure accurate member financial records and account setup
Fund Accounting & Synagogue-Specific Responsibilities
- Maintain and track restricted and designated funds in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards
- Understand and properly record donor-restricted contributions, endowment activity, and special purpose funds
- Track synagogue programs, committees, and auxiliary groups
- Reconcile fund balances and ensure accurate reporting of fund activity
- Maintain awareness of nonprofit accounting principles and synagogue financial practices
Qualifications, Preferred Skills & Knowledge
- Minimum 7+ years bookkeeping or accounting experience including nonprofit accounting (fund accounting strongly preferred)
- Ability to manage accounting operations independently
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Self-motivated, able to learn on their own, and work independently
- Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion
- Strong interpersonal skills and a service-oriented approach when interacting with members, staff, and leadership
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
- Strong knowledge of QuickBooks
- Experience working with synagogues preferred
- Experience with SchulCloud or similar synagogue/member management software preferred
- Experience with Bill.com preferred
Position Details
- 20-30 hours per week
- Reports to Executive Director
- On-site or hybrid depending on synagogue needs
