Overview
We are a warm, independent, inclusive synagogue of 180 family units rooted in tradition and open to innovation. We value spiritual depth, egalitarian and inclusive practice, and meaningful connection. The Executive Director will play a key role in sustaining and growing our mission. Our vibrant and inclusive Jewish community in the Blue Ridge Mountains seeks a visionary and highly organized Executive Director to lead our administrative, financial, and operational functions. This role is crucial to ensuring the synagogue runs smoothly, communicates effectively, and remains financially sound while fostering a warm, welcoming environment for all.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Administration: Ensure that the day-to-day operations of the synagogue are successfully managed, including supervision of volunteers and outside vendors and contractors. Collaborate with the Board of Trustees as well as part-time staff, delegating tasks as necessary.
Financial Management: Help in the development and management of annual budgets in partnership with the Treasurer and administrative assistant. Oversee accounts payable/receivable and give up-to-date information to allow the Treasurer to make accurate financial statements. Support fund-raising efforts and grants.
Communication & Community Engagement: Be the primary point of contact for members, staff, and external partners. Ensure timely and effective communication through email, website, social media, and print as needed. Work with the membership chair to contact and inform prospective members.
Technology & Systems: Be capable of working with common software applications. Work with the Board and staff to ensure that technology needs are well-articulated and existing systems are implemented effectively.
Required Qualifications
• Proven experience in nonprofit or synagogue administration
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree
• Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities
• Tech-savvy, with proficiency in office software and digital tools
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to anticipate challenges
• Positive, collaborative attitude with a commitment to inclusivity and transparency
• Skilled at delegating and motivating others to achieve shared goals
Preferred Qualifications
• Familiarity with Jewish communal life and synagogue operations
• Experience in fundraising, donor relations, or grant writing
