Curatorial Research Assistant

The Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust seeks a qualified and motivated candidate for the position of Curatorial Research Assistant. This role is a full-time, early career position working closely with the Curatorial team to advance exhibition initiatives, and new acquisitions into the Permanent Collection, and provide essential research and curatorial support to the Collections & Exhibitions department.
Job Responsibilities:
- Perform curatorial research for various initiatives related to collections and exhibitions.
- Serve as a primary contact for the incoming new acquisitions process, liaising with potential donors, conducting object and historical research, participating in offsite and intake meetings, cataloging, and related documentation and administration.
- Facilitate external research requests
- Participating in outgoing loan requests
- Provide insight and detailed reports into the Museum’s Collection for internal and external stakeholders
- Collaborate with the Vice President of Collections and exhibitions and the Curatorial team to create exhibition checklists and perform documentation updates for existing exhibitions.
- Ideate and suggest rotations as objects are added or excluded to exhibitions.
- Provide curatorial support for exhibitions, including tours, press, programs, and other appropriate initiatives.
- Assist with creation and/or editing of label copy, didactic text, database descriptions, etc.
- Attend exhibition planning and implementation meetings and assist in taking organized notes and following up on action points.
- Share responsibilities for the daily gallery walkthrough.
- In collaboration with more senior staff, participate in file system overhaul and maintenance.
- Liaise with Marketing staff regarding content research and creation for web, social media, press requests, etc.
- Together with colleagues, work with Department interns to assign appropriate research and other tasks.
- Additional projects as assigned and according to the level of training, background, and ability.
Requirements:
- B.A. in Holocaust Studies, Jewish Studies, History, Museum Studies, or related fields, and/or comparable work experience.
- Strong organizational, research/interpretive, writing, relationship-building, and communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong computer skills; TMS experience a plus.
- Working knowledge of relevant foreign language(s) a plus. (Polish, German, Russian, Hebrew, French, Yiddish, etc.)
- The candidate must also be available to work occasional weekends and holidays.
Position Details:
- Reports to Director of Curatorial Affairs
- Covered by the DC-37 collective bargaining agreement.
- Annual compensation rate of $42,328 ($20.35/hr.)
- Full-time, 40 hours weekly
