Exercise Instructor for Older Adult Center
Status: Part-time, In-Person, 2-6 hours per week
Reports to: Program Director
Salary: $21-24 per hour, commensurate with education and experience
Schedule: Day Shift, Monday to Friday,
The Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC) is a vital community resource that changes the course of lives of Bronx and Manhattan residents to a degree not otherwise possible. Each year, we serve more than 40,000 preschoolers, school age children, teens, adults and senior citizens through our support, enrichment, education, and recreation programs, expanding their opportunities to live full, productive lives.

MMCC’s Cornerstone Programs help foster a greater sense of community by offering year-round activities for children, youth, adults, and seniors in partnership with NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA). Cornerstone programs provide afterschool programs and summer camps for children and teens, recreational activities for youth, family events, and adult programs, such as workforce development, computer classes, and GED preparation that help advance a family’s economic opportunities and livelihood.
Position Summary:
The Exercise Instructor will teach participants different/various exercises such as Zumba, Yoga, Taichi routines. Instructors should have credentials and skills and be able to work with the older adult population.

Major Responsibilities:
● Plan and lead safe, well-structured fitness classes for older adults, adapting exercises to accommodate varying mobility levels, chronic conditions, and physical abilities.
● Submit fitness lesson plans in advance, including warm-up, core activity, cool-down, and modifications (chair-based, low-impact, standing options).
● Conduct classes that promote strength, balance, flexibility, endurance, fall prevention, and overall wellness using age-appropriate techniques.
● Monitor participants for signs of fatigue, dizziness, discomfort, or distress and adjust activities accordingly to ensure safety.
● Provide clear demonstrations, step-by-step instructions, and encouragement in a respectful, supportive manner.
● Foster an inclusive, motivating environment that builds confidence, social connection, and consistent participation.
● Delegate roles to program aides or volunteers (e.g., assisting participants, distributing equipment, monitoring safety) when applicable.
● Communicate with program staff regarding participant progress, limitations, or concerns that may require follow-up or additional support.
● Think “out of the box and into the space” by creatively using available space and equipment to maximize participation (e.g., chair exercises, resistance bands, small-group stations, seated alternatives).
● Ensure proper setup, safe use, cleaning, and storage of fitness equipment and supplies before and after each session.
● Follow all center safety protocols, including hydration reminders, proper footwear guidance, emergency procedures, and accessibility considerations.
● Guide participants in following directions, pacing themselves, and making safe choices during physical activity.
● Attend required staff meetings and training, including those related to senior fitness, safety, and program compliance.
Qualifications:
● Experience in teaching dance required
● Bachelor’s degree or pursuing one (preferred)
● Confident and engaging discussion leader
● Excellent oral and communication skills
● Ready to make a difference in the lives of students and their families
● Must be able to engage young people and set structure and limits in a group setting
● Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based and/or youth development perspective
