Position/Title: Center/Education Director
Status: Full-Time, Non-Union, Exempt, In-Person
Reports To: Program Director/Education Coordinator
Location: Queens, NY
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Annual Salary: $ 76,485 - $90,000 - commensurate with education and experience.

Job Description Summary
The Center/Education Director provides instructional leadership, supervision, and program oversight to ensure the delivery of high-quality early childhood education services in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, UPK guidelines, and Department of Health regulations. This role is responsible for supporting and coaching teaching staff, monitoring classroom instruction, and promoting school readiness through developmentally appropriate, research-based practices. The Center/Education Director collaborates closely with program leadership, families, and community partners to foster a nurturing, inclusive learning environment that supports the cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development of all children while advancing the mission and goals of the Child Development Center.
Qualifications
The Center/Education Director must meet all requirements established by the Department of Health, Mosholu Montefiore Community Center/Child Development Center, Universal Pre-K (UPK), and Head Start.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education
- A New York State Initial or Permanent Teaching Certificate
- At least five (5) years of experience in early childhood education or a related childcare setting
The Center/Education Director is responsible for providing strong leadership, supervision, and support to classroom staff, as well as implementing a system of ongoing monitoring to ensure compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and/or UPK Guidelines. The Director must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, therapists, consultants, and program leadership.
Primary Function
The Center/Education Director is a key member of the Head Start and/or UPK leadership team. The position is responsible for providing instructional leadership and supervision aligned with the Child Development Center’s school readiness goals, the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework, the Common Core Learning Standards for Pre-K, developmentally appropriate practices, and research-based instructional strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide guidance, coaching, instruction, and assessment feedback to teachers and parents
- Conduct classroom observations and provide constructive feedback to teaching staff
- Develop and facilitate Home-to-School and School-to-Home workshops and training for parents and staff
- Provide classroom coverage in the absence of teachers, as needed
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop lesson plans and implement small-group activities that address children’s individual cognitive, motor, and social-emotional needs
- Facilitate overall educational leadership and instructional support at assigned sites and classrooms
- Model developmentally appropriate practices in classrooms and best practices for family engagement
- Conduct home visits when necessary
- Partner with teachers to develop instructional strategies that support school readiness
- Promote and strengthen parent involvement to support children’s learning and school readiness
- Collaborate with Family Services, Disabilities Coordinators, and consultants to support children and families
- Work closely with the Program Director/Education Coordinator to develop operational procedures, implement strategic initiatives, and complete program-related projects
- Serve on project teams or in an advisory role to support organizational initiatives
- Ensure compliance with program, state, federal, and licensing requirements
- Support the Program Director/Education Coordinator in achieving program-wide goals
- Arrange transportation contracts and coordinate educational trips
- Complete teacher/staff performance evaluations
- Maintain licensing and compliance documentation
- Respond appropriately to emergencies
- Collect and summarize data to support instructional planning and individualized teaching
- Ensure timely completion of child assessments
- Assist with referrals for children requiring further evaluation or services
- Attend staff meetings, professional development sessions, and program events
- Communicate the program’s mission, vision, and goals to staff, parents, children, and community partners
- Participate in professional development, self-assessments, and goal-setting activities to enhance professional growth
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Program Director/Education Coordinator
