Assistant Teacher

Status: Full-Time, Union, In-Person

Reports to Education Director

Schedule:Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

Annual Salary: - commensurate with education and experience.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Teacher supports the Head/Lead Teacher in a Head Start/Early Head Start/UPK classroom to ensure the effective and safe operation of the learning environment. The Assistant Teacher collaborates with classroom staff and families to implement developmentally appropriate curriculum and promote positive outcomes for children of all abilities.

Qualifications:

Candidates must meet all requirements established by the Department of Health, Child Development Center, Mosholu Montefiore Community Center, and Head Start.

· Associate’s degree or a minimum of 60 college credits in Early Childhood Education required.

· Child Development Associate (CDA) credential (Infant/Toddler or Preschool) preferred.

· Prior experience working with young children required.

· CDA (Infant/Toddler) credential is required for Early Head Start classrooms

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Implement a child-centered curriculum and learning environment that promotes positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation across all early childhood developmental domains.

· Support children with challenging behaviors by implementing preventive strategies, teaching social and communication skills, and partnering with families to reinforce learning at home.

· Assist with the preparation and implementation of daily lesson plans.

· Support the development of individualized plans for each child.

· Assist in planning and implementing classroom activities that support children’s academic, social, developmental, physical, and mental health needs.

· Participate in two educational home visits per year.

· Assist with completing developmental assessments for each child within the first 45 days of school.

· Participate in quarterly Teaching Strategies GOLD assessments (Fall, Winter, and Spring) to monitor student progress.

· Document and track children’s progress toward school readiness goals.

· Support children and families during transitions into and out of the program.

· Maintain classroom equipment and instructional materials.

· Ensure the classroom environment is safe, clean, and organized at all times.

Requirements:

· Basic computer skills, including email, word processing, and internet navigation.

· Mandated Reporter/Child Abuse Identification and Reporting, Preventing Infectious Diseases/Foundations in Health and Safety, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) training certificates required.

· Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within the first six months of employment.

· Ability to lift and carry a child weighing up to 40 pounds multiple times per day, as needed.
