Reports to Program Director

Status: Full-Time, Non-Union, In-Person

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Annual Salary: $52,000 - $64,000 - commensurate with education and experience.

Location: Queens, NY

Job Description Summary

The Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of CDC’s Health Services and Safety Plans. This includes oversight of children’s health records (e.g., Children’s Records, ChildPlusNet), follow-up on health requirements, and ensuring full compliance with Department of Health (DOH), Head Start, and UPK regulations.

The Coordinator oversees the implementation of the program’s Nutritional Services Plan, including coordination and/or supervision of the Nutritionist, Nurse, Cooks, and facility-related services. The position plays an integral role in program planning, development, and self-assessment and collaborates closely with education, family services, and leadership staff to promote the health, safety, and well-being of children and families.

Duties and Responsibilities

Health, Nutrition, and Safety Services

  • Collaborates with the Nutritionist to provide training and workshops for parents on healthy eating habits for the entire family.
  • Observes classrooms and supports teachers in the implementation of family-style dining practices.
  • Works with the Education Coordinator and education team to integrate healthy eating habits and gross motor activities into weekly curriculum planning.
  • Conducts health and safety workshops and trainings for staff and parents.
  • Collaborates with the Nutritionist, teachers, family workers, and parents to individualize plans for children who are underweight, overweight, or obese.
  • Monitors and tracks the ongoing health status and health needs of enrolled children.
  • Ensures Family Services staff follow up with families regarding identified health concerns and required services.

Family Engagement and Compliance

  • Assists parents in completing required 45-day developmental screenings and 90-day health requirements.
  • Works with and supports families whose children do not meet the 85% attendance requirement due to illness or other health conditions
  • Conducts home visits as required to support child and family health and attendance goals.

Program Monitoring and Quality Improvement

  • Coordinates and facilitates Health Advisory Board meetings to ensure access to adequate medical and dental resources within the community.
  • Conducts ECERS-R assessments, provides feedback to teachers and Center/Education Directors, and models best practices in classrooms.
  • Completes the annual service plan for health and safety, including continuous monitoring and evaluation of program activities.
  • Ensures compliance with Head Start, UPK, and DOH performance standards related to health, safety, and nutrition.
  • Collaborates on ongoing monitoring and annual self-assessment efforts related to the health, safety, education, and security of children and families.

Data, Reporting, and Policy Development

  • Tracks and analyzes Health Services data and provides program development recommendations to the leadership team.
  • Completes monthly reports detailing activities, progress toward goals, and recommended plan modifications; submits reports to the Program Director.
  • Develops and updates policies and procedures to strengthen CDC Health and Safety Services.

Other Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in Head Start and UPK programs.
  • Knowledge of Early Childhood Development, CACFP requirements, DOHMH Article 47, and Head Start/UPK health and safety regulations required.
