Group Leader / Youth Worker

for Youth and Family Services Department

Status: Part-Time, In-Person

Reports to Program Director

Hourly Rate: $17.50 - $22.00, commensurate with education and experience

Work Location: Various school locations in the Bronx and Manhattan

Schedule: Monday through Friday between 2:00PM – 6:00PM, Max 18 hours a week

The Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC) serves over 35,000 residents of the Bronx and Manhattan, offering support, enrichment, education, and recreation programs. MMCC fosters a family-like, team-oriented work atmosphere

We are looking for Group Leaders to supervise children in the MMCC after-school programs. These programs serve youngsters involved in various programs including SONYC and COMPASS programs. Group Leaders will directly supervise Kgt-8th grade students. This will include leading activities, addressing social emotional needs, participating in programs to encourage engagement and building teamwork amongst the youth. Group Leaders are never alone with a child and work as a team to ensure all needs are met.

Responsibilities:

· Plan, implement, and document successful educational, recreation, youth leadership, community service, and arts activities with school-aged children.

· Proactively adhere to policies and procedures, making the safety and care of children your primary focus.

· Build a positive relationship with each after-school participant in your care and foster positive connections between participants.

· Actively engage with children at all times to foster the positive development of each child and the group.

· Conduct yourself as a professional and representative of the agency with school staff, parents, children, and anyone else with whom you come into contact in your role.

· Effectively manage assigned groups.

· Actively participate in all aspects of staff or member development, including weekly supervision, weekly team meetings, and on-going training.

· Work on specific goals for participants provided by the program director

· Escort and oversee children

· Educate participants through games and explorations

· Resolve and address behavioral issues when needed

· Make sure all safety rules are followed

· Foster a welcoming environment at the program/site; promote a positive and inclusive work environment.

· Other assignments, as requested.

Skills and Requirements:

· Ability to work some evenings and weekends as required for program implementation.

· Proven experience as a group leader or similar role working with children, especially children with special needs

· Familiarity with various children-related activities

· Passion for working with children

· Patient and reliable

· Organizational and communication skills

· Energetic and positive personality

· Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (strength and stamina to follow strenuous activities like hiking, running, or crouching

· High school diploma or GED, associate, or bachelor’s degree preferred

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

· Must provide quality internal and external community service; demonstrate good judgment in dealing with issues; be solutions oriented.

· Must be able to work independently and as part of a team

· Must be able to meet deadlines and with attention to task details.
