American Civics and ESOL Instructor (Advanced)

In-person, Part-time, 15 - 21 hours per week

Reports to: ESOL Director, Support Services Department

Hourly salary: $30 - $35, commensurate with education and experience

Schedule: 15 - 21 hours per week, Morning, daytime, evening, and weekend shifts are available. The schedule is based on the location of the site assigned.

The Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC) is the largest not-for-profit provider of quality education, employment, and health and recreation programs in the impoverished neighborhoods of the North Bronx, serving the needs of more than 35,000 residents each year. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Instruct different levels of ESOL/Civics students.
  • Maintain and keep attendance records.
  • Develop and design a curriculum that will connect with students from diverse backgrounds and age groups; overall approaches relating to literacy, life skills, and workplace English focusing on basic English skills such as listening/speaking and reading/writing.
  • Assessing students with the BEST Plus 3.0 as Pre-Test for placement and Post-Test for progress in the computer.
  • Assessments like quizzes, weekly/monthly tests, classwork, and homework are maintained in individual folder of students by the teacher as additional evaluation of students' progress.
  • Writing Progress Notes for students monthly for evaluation and follow up of students' progress.
  • Attending DYCD and LAC professional development sessions for learning and enhancing methods and approaches in language teaching.
  • Participating in staff meetings for important information and interaction with co-workers on significant matters affecting the program.
  • Respond to other duties as required by the director.
  • Create lesson plans for multi-level ESOL/Civics Classes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish
  • BEST Plus 3.0 certificate.
  • Must have at least one year of teaching experience with adults in the ESOL/Civics field. Open to recent graduates from M.A. TESOL Programs or Literacy Assistance Center. TESLA graduate with ESL certificate(preferred).
  • Computer literate to administer the BEST Plus 3.0 and for program reports.
  • Knowledge of another language and culture besides English are required that may affect the students' ability to acclimate to an English-speaking environment.
  • Flexible in dealing with co-workers as to coordination of activities such as celebrations, field trips, and lesson preparation.
  • Must be able to adapt lesson planning, references, and materials to suit the students' styles of learning and English levels.
  • Must be able to teach ESOL / Civics classes at varying levels
