Position Overview
Shabbat Coordinators assist with event production and community welcoming at Mishkan’s Shabbat services, Family Programs, Adult learning opportunities, and other Mishkan programs. The Shabbat schedule is as follows:
- Friday Night Shabbat
- 2nd & 4th Fridays of the month - In person services
- 3rd Friday of the month - Virtual/digital services
- Saturday Morning Shabbat
- 1st & 3rd Saturdays of the month - In person services (Including BMitzvah celebrations)
Other programs and holidays are booked with Coordinators on an ongoing and as-needed basis.
Shabbat Coordinators can work as much as they want based on availability, but generally work 1-3 events per month with an average of 5-10 hours for each event. This position will work closely with a rotating group of other Shabbat Coordinators and contract staff, as well as Mishkan full-time staff and clergy. This position will primarily report to Mishkan’s Creative Producer & Director of Livestream, Anna Gelman.
What You’ll Do:
Event Production (50%)
- Assists with load in and load out of all Shabbat/Program/Holiday supplies including loading and lifting bins, organizing Mishkan’s production van and storage space, packing and unpacking supplies.
- Maintains organization of Shabbat supplies while onsite for production.
- Setting up and cleaning up catered meals, coffee & wine.
- Preparing and handling ritual supplies, including siddurim, kippot & tallitot, and challah and wine.
Welcome & Greeting (50%)
- Greets and welcomes community members with warmth and enthusiasm.
- Assists community members with any questions or needs.
- Orients Mishkan volunteers to various greeting tasks.
Qualifications & Experience
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Ability to lift 30 or more pounds.
- Ability to collaborate and work well with others.
- Ability to work quickly and efficiently.
- Ability to take direction and feedback.
- Ability to follow specific and time based tasks.
- Warmth and friendliness when communicating with community members.
- Preferred experience in customer service, event production, food service, or retail.
- Preferred knowledge of Jewish holidays, customs, etc.
Working Conditions:
- This role is based in the city of Chicago. Shabbat Coordinators work in person at events around the North Side of the city. Neighborhoods include Ravenswood, Lakeview, Avondale, North Center, Lincoln Park, Andersonville, and more.
- Part time employment, to be scheduled.
- Shabbat is scheduled on a quarterly basis, additional holidays and programs are scheduled as needed.
Compensation
- $20 - $25/hr depending on program and role in production.
- Coordinators are eligible for an annual hourly raise, based on consistent performance and shifts worked.
