General Summary:

Maintains a professional classroom, providing instruction in English as a Second Language to adult participants, many of whom are young parents

Principal Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Maintains a professional classroom, providing English language instruction to High Beginner or Intermediate Level participants. Incorporates contextual learning using a variety of audio visual materials and real life materials such as newspapers, catalogs, children’s books and maps.

  1. Coordinates field trips and educational outings for participants and their children to promote hands on learning about the community.

  1. Provides educational assessments, using CASAS and other diagnostic tools to place the participant in the appropriate level of instruction. Incorporates computer assisted instruction in teaching methods and promotes basic computer literacy. Makes recommendations for the purchase of resource materials and classroom supplies necessary for adult learners.

  1. Maintains educational files and student portfolios for each participant, including placement tests/scores; post test scores, and work samples. Submits required reports in a timely and accurate manner.

  1. Maintains attendance records and tracks hours of instruction; develops and implements retention strategies and shares these with Program Manager to promote greater completion of participant goals.

  1. Engages in professional development opportunities to enhance skills; facilitate in-service training for other staff when appropriate.

  1. Attends staff meetings and participates in case review meetings to discuss participant’s needs and goals.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field and experience using nontraditional teaching methods.
  2. Must demonstrate a commitment and ability to serve a diverse community, including low-income families and English language learners.
