Job Title: LINC Instructor

Position Summary
General Overview:
As a member of the JIAS Toronto LINC team, the LINC instructor plans, prepares and delivers English language classes to adult newcomer learners. This is a unionized position.
Hours of Work:
- Wednesday and Friday (9:00 am – 11:00 am)
Location:
- 15 Hove Street, Toronto, Ontario, M3H 4Y8
- This position is currently a remote delivery position
- Please note, this location is wheelchair accessible
Wage Rate:
- $46.08
Duties and Responsibilities
- Follows and adapts the most recent LINC curriculum to meet the students’ needs.
- Administers a student needs assessment and develops the curriculum based on those needs.
- Plans, prepares and administers client-centered/learner-based lessons taking into account the CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) and funder directives, while also considering students’ needs and interests.
- Has full knowledge and understanding of and employs the principles of Portfolio-Based Language Assessment when planning and delivering lessons.
- Maintains an up to date PBLA Language Companion with the required documentation and prescribed number of PBLA artifacts. Ensures that learners’ Language Companions are kept up to date.
- Submits monthly module plans and curriculum summaries.
- Ensures class time is maximized.
- Is punctual and prepared for class with all the necessary teaching materials.
- Records students’ attendance daily and regularly reports attendance to the office.
- Performs regular, on-going assessment of students’ progress based on the principles of PBLA, records it and reports it to the office on a regular basis for HARTs proficiency input.
- Ensures there is a positive and welcoming learning atmosphere in the classroom. Promotes and sets an example of mutual respect and inclusivity while promoting the principles of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
- Uses technology in the classroom to enhance learning experience.
- Uses Zoom or other online platforms, as well as a variety of online teaching materials and tools to deliver lessons remotely. (For scheduled online classes.)
- Helps students gain awareness of the various aspects of Canadian culture and lifestyle through presentations, workshops, and special events/activities.
- Participates in professional devolvement opportunities, staff meetings, annual general meetings and special projects as required.
- Completes required Human Resources and other training at regular intervals.
- Is aware of signs of abuse and reports them to the Language and Settlement Director and proper authorities.
Required Qualifications
- Experience as an English language teacher/instructor.
- Experience in the settlement sector - an asset.
- Has TESL Ontario certification (or is grandfathered with TESL equivalent from a certified Canadian University).
- Trained in the application of Portfolio-Based Language Assessment
- Must be familiar with Fire and other Emergency Procedures.
