Summary:

The Staff Accountant supports the finance team and program directors so they can provide quality services to clients who are struggling with basic needs including food, mental health care, senior services, and child abuse prevention.

Essential Functions

  • Processes bookkeeping transactions, manages accounts payable and accounts receivable, and reconciles bank, credit card and investment accounts.
  • Manages Children’s Service Fund and client services billing.
  • Aligns general ledger accounting practices to support reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Prepares grant budget reports.
  • Assists in payroll and benefit processing
  • Assists with month end closing procedures and reporting
  • Assists program directors with preparing annual program budgets and grant proposal budgets.
  • In coordination with the Chief Financial Officer, prepares annual operating budget.
  • Participates in the annual audit process.
  • Assists with staff training in the areas of budget development, budget management, fiscal accountability, financial procedures, human resources, and others, as needed.
  • Ensures a positive and productive work environment.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Complies with all company policies and standards.

Education: Degree in business, accounting, or finance required.

Work Experience: Minimum of three years of related experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of fiscal management, budgeting, and financial reporting principles and procedures, including the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledge of general ledger systems, nonprofit accounting practices, and accounting terminology.
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks or other information systems used in financial and accounting applications. Demonstrated ability to learn new systems and generate and analyze complex financial reports.
  • Ability to use general office equipment, computers, and related software programs, including advanced experience with Excel spreadsheets.
  • General knowledge of nonprofit auditing policies, standards, and procedures.
  • General knowledge of local, state, and federal financial regulations.
  • Demonstrates teamwork and support of the JFS mission and values.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to manage sensitive budgetary situations, which may have a negative impact on individual employees, groups of employees, and/or clients.

Work Environment

Work is typically performed in an office environment.

Physical Demands

This position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Travel

Local travel may be required to make deposits or to conduct other JFS business.
