Summary:

The Volunteer Coordinator supports the safe operation of the Food Pantry by overseeing the pantry volunteers in their daily activities. This position also plans, coordinates, and directs key functions of the volunteer program, including recruitment, recognition/retention activities, agency orientation, compliance, and training staff to work with volunteers, thus ensuring that over 15,000 guests each year are treated with respect and dignity, and receive a high level of customer service.

Essential Functions:

  • Supports the daily operations of the food pantry, leading by example and maintaining a safe and clean facility.
  • Ensures adequate volunteer coverage for pantry operations. Communicates the needs of the pantry with active volunteers for projects and shift openings.
  • Collaborates with the Food Pantry Director on the development of, implementation of, marketing of, and recruitment for of the volunteer program as determined by agency goals.
  • Plans and implements recognition program for volunteers throughout the year as needed.
  • Collaborates with the Pantry Manager and Supply Chain Coordinator to ensure staff and volunteers are properly trained to efficiently service guests, while following established compliance and safety protocols. Coordinates on-site training for staff and volunteers in accordance with JFS and USDA policies.
  • Maintains volunteer schedules, including accurate record of hours of service along with background checks and consent forms.
  • Registers new and existing guests, shops with and for guests, and inspects, sorts and stocks food as needed.
  • Addresses guest and volunteer concerns in a timely and appropriate manner.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in social work, nonprofit administration, or related experience required.

Work Experience: Experience in staff and/or volunteer recruitment, training, and supervision.

Work Environment

Work is typically performed in a warehouse/food pantry environment, as well as other offsite locations. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

Physical Demands

This position requires an above average amount of physical efforts including standing, lifting, and carrying light to moderately heavy products or equipment, up to 50 pounds and/or sometimes prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Travel

Travel may be required for meetings with individuals and/or groups throughout the St. Louis area.
