Position Summary

The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington seeks an experienced, thoughtful, and mission-aligned professional to serve as Associate Director of Community Impact. This role will manage a portfolio of strategic investments aligned with Federation’s priorities and work closely with internal teams, community partners, and lay leaders to drive impact across the Jewish community.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Community Change Initiatives, the Associate Director will oversee grantmaking and strategy development in one or more focus areas and will contribute to the design, evaluation, and evolution of our philanthropic strategies.

This is a key position for a collaborative, values-driven professional who brings strong project management skills, grantmaking experience, relationship fluency, and a passion for building thriving Jewish communities.

Key Responsibilities

Portfolio Strategy & Grantmaking

· Lead and manage a portfolio of grants and initiatives aligned with Federation’s strategic priorities.

· Conduct due diligence, assess proposals, track performance, and provide thought partnership to grantees.

· Develop and manage Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and allocation processes in collaboration with professional and lay leadership.

· Use data and feedback to inform strategy refinement, grantee support, and funding recommendations.

· Serve as the main point of contact for grantees and community partners in the portfolio.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

· Collaborate with internal teams to align strategies and identify cross-functional opportunities.

· Coordinate with lay working groups or advisory committees to inform funding strategies and gather community input.

Lead Lay Working Group(s)

· Serve as the primary staff partner to one or more working groups, responsible for developing the group’s annual arc of engagement and a timeline to meet key decision-making deadlines.

· Guide lay leaders in reviewing strategies, evaluating grant proposals and reports, and aligning recommendations with broader Federation goals.

· Support co-chairs in facilitating meetings and ensuring group cohesion, clarity, and impact.

Learning, Evaluation & Field Engagement

· Monitor emerging needs, innovations, and trends in your portfolio areas to inform learning and adaptation.

· Represent Federation in field conversations, grantee convenings, or learning sessions.

· Help craft and implement evaluation tools to assess impact and strengthen future strategy.

· Surface insights from the community and grantee relationships to help Federation make informed decisions.

· Help plan convenings, roundtables, or learning opportunities with and for community partners.

Qualifications & Competencies

· 5–7 years of professional experience in philanthropy, Jewish communal service, education, social impact, or a related field.

· Experience managing grant portfolios or community partnerships.

· Demonstrated understanding of nonprofit strategy, budgeting, and program evaluation.

· Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.

· Ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally in a complex organization.

· Familiarity with Jewish life, values, and institutions a strong plus.
