PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Recreation Therapy Assistant carries out established activities and programs under the general supervision of the Recreation Therapist{s} and Manager, Allied Health Services. The position involves supporting resident recreation and wellness needs during their waking hours and involves completing activities and programs in both group and one-on-one settings.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • As directed, carries out resident activities and programs, both inside and outside the facility, including but not limited to wellness programs, arts and crafts, sports, music, woodworking, cooking, gardening, socialization, and exercises in large and small groups and one-to-one.
  • Prepares for, sets up and organizes furnishings and equipment for activities and programs, teaches the techniques of related activities and programs to residents, oversees the activities and reports on the outcome, including metrics, quality indicators, concerns and changes to the supervisor.
  • Checks that each resident has appropriate clothing and necessary equipment for the activity, confirms details of proposed activity with nursing/medical staff, co-ordinates the movement of residents before and during the activity.
  • As required, drives resident bus and is responsible for resident safety at external recreation activities.
  • Carries out activities and programs and supports residents around the celebration of the Sabbath and Jewish holidays.
  • Provides dining room support and supervision of resident(s) including portering residents to and from the service, handing out food trays, opening containers of food, monitoring for choking and other safety concerns and assisting residents as needed.
  • Provides direction to volunteers during activities and programs and demonstrates related techniques as required.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and materials and reports malfunctioning equipment and supply needs to appropriate staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Grade 12, completion of recognized recreational courses such as handicrafts plus two years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid Class 4 Drivers License preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.

HOURS OF WORK: Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 9-17 Monday, 12:30-20:30

SALARY: 29.83/hourly - Grid 22
