Job Summary

The Chief Financial and Operating Officer is responsible for managing all operational aspects of the Agency, including compliance and business continuity. The COO provides the leadership, management and vision necessary to ensure that the agency has the proper financial controls, liquidity, reporting procedures and organizational resources in place to effectively grow the organization and to ensure financial strength and efficiency.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Department Oversight - Oversee the entirety of Information Technology, Accounting, Billing, Human Resources, Quality Improvement, Compliance and Facilities functions.
  2. Finance & Budgeting – Oversee the continual improvement of the accounting, finance and budgeting processes through enacting progressive departmental procedures and education of department managers on budgetary issues impacting their budgets and ongoing departmental performance to the budget
  3. Cash Management - Responsible for optimizing the balance sheet, including investments and working capital.
  4. Risk Management - Identify risks to the organization and develops strategies to mitigate them, including working in partnership with Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit annual renewal of various lines of commercial insurance.
  5. Reporting - Responsible for the measurement and effectiveness of all processes internal and external by providing timely, accurate and complete reports on the financial condition of the agency to internal business units and board committees as required.
  6. Growth Opportunities - Coordinate the development, communication and implementation of effective financial improvement & growth strategies/processes.
  7. Administrative Improvement - Develop credibility for the executive administration group by providing timely and accurate analyses of budgets, project proposals and business trends for all departments in order to assist others in performing their responsibilities. Evaluate the administrative division structure and team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group as well as providing individuals with professional and personal growth with emphasis on opportunities (where possible) of individuals.
  8. Liaisons - Staff the board’s audit and finance committees, providing insight and reporting into all areas of the agency as requested by the respective committees. Develops and maintains relationships with JFS stakeholders and service providers, including Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, banks and investment advisors.
  9. Ambassadorship - With other members of the management team, participate in the agency's ongoing relationships with officials and organizations by monitoring relationships, grants and legislation for appropriate comment and action of the respective departments of the agency, coordinating the agency's communication with partners on various matters and presenting the agency's position on matters.
  10. Leadership Team – Work closely with CEO and other executives to help manage the entire organization, executing on the strategic plan and all other agency-wide matters.
  11. Security and Privacy - Adhere to agency and client protection policies by regularly acclimating yourself with the JFS privacy, safety and security policies made available within the employee handbook.
  12. Employee Philanthropy - Participate annually in agency and partner related philanthropic activities and campaigns.
  13. Mission Dedication - Embody the mission and values of JFS in all work done on behalf of the agency. Utilization of the JFS key strategies will ensure success in this accountability.
  14. Miscellaneous - Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Experience: 5-8 years experience in an executive operations role in human services preferred

Education: Master’s Degree preferred

Skills

  1. Technology - Interact with a variety of databases and productivity tools (including electronic health record, general ledger, Microsoft Excel) to gather metrics, assist programs in accomplishing reporting and integration needs as well as to deliver support to users.
  2. Analysis - Analyze raw data to determine patterns and discern the meaning of said patterns.
  3. Reporting - Compile analyzed data into a monthly report that supplies meaningful, applicable and useful information for stakeholders on their performance against determined metrics.
  4. Logic - Demonstrate effective judgment by making appropriate decisions, as well as conducting and maintaining a professional manner and appearance at all times.
  5. Time Management - Use time effectively by appropriately planning, organizing and scheduling required work hours to meet agency needs.

Knowledge

  1. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles - must have an understanding of GAAP in general and specifically as it applies to not for profits and consistently review this information for relevant updates.
  2. Project Management - Understand project management protocol areas and processes and keep current on changes in processes.
  3. IRS reporting and regulations - must have understanding and maintain knowledge base of specific IRS regulations, including how they apply to grant management.
