Full-Time and Part-Time positions available

SUMMARY:

The occupation of a lifeguard encompasses the duties of rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning, the monitoring of activities at a swimming pool to prevent accidents, the teaching of water safety through the communication of rules and policies, and providing assistance to patrons. This position will also help to maintain order and cleanliness in the pool and pool areas, give instructions to swimmers, conduct or officiate at swimming meets, and administer first aid. Additional ancillary lifeguard duties may include checking in and out such items as towels, rings, watches and apparel to the lost and found. and This position will be required to test and record water quality for temperature and/or pH levels, using all of the tools of the testing process including adding chemicals to the test water sample.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates with Lifeguard certification from other agencies may be considered, but will be required to successfully “cross-over” to American red Cross Lifeguarding certification within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Current Certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer (including use of AED) & First Aid certifications.
  • Current Baltimore County and Baltimore City Pool Operator's certification preferred (we will assist with obtaining certification if hired for full-time position).
  • Candidates who are selected may be required to successfully complete training in Bloodborne Pathogens, handling of hazardous materials (HAZMAT), Oxygen Administration, and child abuse prevention.
  • At least 2 years lifeguarding experience preferred for full-time position (must provide references from previous employer).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for safety of all swimmers during shift and for the interpretation and enforcement of all pool rules.
  • Responsible for presenting a positive, professional image of the JCC to members and guests and for providing outstanding member service through information, service, and courtesy at all times.
  • Responsible for performing chemical readings and helping to maintain pool conditions according to Maryland bathing code.
  • Responsible for routine cleanliness of pool area, including scrubbing deck, railings, scum-lines and other areas around the pool.
  • Active participation in regularly scheduled in-service training.
  • Maintain a high degree of personal physical fitness and readiness to react in the event of an emergency.
  • Assist Aquatics staff in other areas as needed.

work enviroNment:

The work environment for lifeguards is usually hot and humid.Air quality within indoor pools may be reduced due to increased levels of chloramines and ammonia compounds produced from the disinfection of pool water.

physical demands:

Candidates should be able to swim 500 meters (550 yards) continuously in under 15 minutes, retrieve an object from water with a depth of 10 feet and return with it for a distance of 25 yards in under one minute and 30 seconds; perform any of the basic rescues required for American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification, demonstrate proper CPR skills, and respond appropriately to emergency scenarios.

Lifeguards must be able to see and correctly identify objects (with vision correction or appropriate sunglasses) at a distance of 125 feet.Lifeguards must also be able to see in bright light.(Lifeguards must provide their own equipment, i.e. sunglasses, for dealing with glare and bright light conditions.) Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Lifeguards must be able to remain at their post for extended periods of up to three hours without a break.Lifeguards are expected to be attired appropriately for entering the water and performing rescue procedures.Lifeguards are expected to enter the water as needed to perform maintenance and other functions and should be able to return to their initial post for an extended period, even in wet clothing.

Lifeguards must be able to use a ladder to access and descend from the lifeguard chair.

Lifeguards must be able to use hand tools to clean the pool and pool area.

Lifeguards must be able to remove an unconscious adult from the water (with assistance and using appropriate methods.)
