SUMMARY:

A certifications instructor would be responsible for administering and teaching American Red Cross Certification Classes. The instructor must be up to date in all American Red Cross protocols and comfortable teaching both blended and in-person lesson. The instructor would be responsible for teaching the course, set-up, and clean-up of necessary equipment for the course and submitting course records for the assigned course.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Teach American Red Cross Courses (including lifeguarding, first aid, CPR/AED, babysitting, water safety instructor, CPR for Professional Rescuer, BLS)
  • Support aquatics department in recruitment of staff upon completion of courses
  • Administration related to course taught including setting up and reporting courses
  • Set-up and break-down / disinfection of course specific materials and equipment
  • Participate in departmental and agency training, staff meetings, supervisory conferences, committees, and special events as assigned.
  • Enforce agency policies and procedures.
  • In an emergency elsewhere within the agency, react in accordance with published emergency procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director or that person’s supervisors.

WHO YOU ARE:

  • Current certification as an American Red Cross Instructor or Instructor Trainer (for Lifeguarding, CPR/AED/FA, WSI, Babysitting, BLS)
  • At least 17 years of age or older
  • Certified in adult and pediatric CPR/AED/FA

PHYSICAL SKILLS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing this job, the employee will be required to spend time sitting and using a computer, laptop, or phone. The employee will frequently be on their feet for periods of time. The employee must be able to see and hold an image of a student’s performance in memory to provide feedback and correction. The employee must have the physical flexibility required to demonstrate and perform skills for various training programs, including lifeguarding.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. At times, the employee might be required to lift or pull a human body onto the deck, such as when demonstrating lifeguard rescues.

The work environment may be fast paced and requires high energy and interaction with others. The workspace may be noisy, at times. When teaching on a pool deck it can be extremely hot / humid and you might be in an indoor or outdoor pool environment. The work environment for lifeguard instructors is usually hot and humid. Air quality within indoor pools may be reduced to increased levels of chloramines and ammonia compounds produced from the disinfection of pool water. The instructor must be able to see in bright light. (This person must provide their own equipment, i.e., sunglasses, for dealing with glare and bright light conditions.) Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary (or Salary Range): $20/ hr
